The Hidden Truths We Keep From Our Children
Hello there, my little munchkins! It’s your dad here, sharing a few secrets that you’re blissfully unaware of because, well, you’re still too young to read or understand what a blog is. Lucky you!
I have a treasure trove of secrets that could shatter my parental authority if you ever discovered them. So, here are 10 confidential truths that I’ll keep under wraps… at least until you become parents yourselves.
- TV is My Treat, Not Yours. Ever wonder why I don’t reward you with TV for good behavior? When you’re being delightful, I don’t need a screen to entertain you. However, when the whining and fighting kick in, I turn to the TV for a bit of peace. Those 22 delightful minutes of “Pingu” are my little escape from toddler chaos. So, if you ever find yourself watching more TV, it probably means you’ve been a handful!
- Chocolate Cookies Are My Secret Snack. You probably think I don’t eat much, but when you’re napping, I indulge in a cookie feast. I try to set a good example for you, which means no munching in front of you. But once you’re asleep? It’s game on! I’m devouring chocolate chip cookies like there’s no tomorrow. Oh, and I catch up on my favorite shows too, sitting as close to the screen as I please.
- Your Tears Get Me Every Time. I’m not sure where you inherited your acting skills, but you both have a knack for dramatic performances. Those tears you shed, whether over a lost toy or not getting a second cookie, can be pretty convincing. Even when I suspect you might be faking it, I often find myself wanting to give in simply because your performances are Oscar-worthy.
- College Costs More Than You Can Imagine. Thankfully, you have no clue about money yet, because if you did, you’d probably lose sleep over college costs. Imagine all the Play-Doh in the world; that’s what a year of your future college will cost. Our current stash would barely cover a single semester! We might have some saving to do!
- Your Speech Quirks Are Adorable. I know I’ve said I dislike baby talk, but your little speech mishaps actually warm my heart. Whether it’s the lisp you’ve developed or the way you drop the “S” sounds, these moments remind me that you’re still my little ones. I’ll correct you gently, but inside, I’m smiling and thinking, “Aww!”
- My Dad Is No Longer Here. I’ve shown you pictures of my father, and I talk about him, but I’m grateful you’re too young to ask why you’ve never met him. That conversation about death is a tough one, and I’m just not ready for it. For now, I’ll tell you the happy stories and change the subject. You would have loved him dearly.
- There Are Some Words I’d Rather You Not Know. You know that fun song we sing together? I always turn down the volume during certain parts because there are a few choice words included that I hope you won’t pick up on anytime soon!
- I Was a Picky Eater Too. Getting you to try new foods feels like an uphill battle, but I’m doing it to spare you from the same picky habits I had. I survived eating only peanut butter sandwiches for years! I hope you’ll at least explore a few different food groups before you hit your teenage years.
- I Will Go Back to Work One Day. You might not understand what work means right now, but I know there will come a day when I’ll return to a job. While being home with you is the best experience I’ve ever had, the time will come when we’ll need another income. I can’t help but feel sad thinking about how you’ll miss me when I’m gone.
- You Are My Best Friends. I used to think it was odd for parents to call their kids their best friends, but I see it now. Sure, I need some adult conversation from time to time, but your stories about school and friends fill my heart. Just remember, you need me as a parent more than a buddy, and my role is to keep things in order, even if that means dealing with the occasional juice spill from your friend, Jake!

In summary, parenting comes with its own set of secrets—some amusing, some serious—that I’ll keep from you for now. But one day, when you have children of your own, you might find yourself holding onto a few secrets of your own!
