Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in being a supportive friend to other moms. From embracing the chaos of a messy home to ensuring my bathroom has a few surprises, I’m proud to say I’ve learned a lot about friendship. Here are my top 9 tips to help you become an even better friend!
1. Embrace a Little Clutter
When friends visit, I’ve found that a slightly disorganized space makes everyone feel at ease. A bit of countertop chaos or even a less-than-spotless bathroom can create a comfortable atmosphere. Plus, my pets and kids always add their own unique scents to the mix!
2. Let the Kids Be Loud
Whenever I’m on the phone with a friend, my kids seem to know it’s the perfect time to unleash their inner wildlings. I believe this is a special gift I offer; it either reassures my friends that their own kids are normal or makes them feel like supermoms for having quieter households.
3. Accidentally Burn Dinner
Having guests over? Consider making a culinary blunder! One Thanksgiving, I hilariously left the turkey’s innards inside and made a big deal out of it at the table. It instantly made everyone feel like better chefs, and that’s a win in my book.
4. Look a Bit Disheveled
While I usually put effort into my appearance, I’ve learned that a little imperfection can go a long way. Before stepping out, I might smudge some baby food on my clothes or wear a pair of jeans with a deliberate tear. It helps others feel relaxed around me.
5. Forget Your Child (Once)
I haven’t done this yet, but I’m keeping it in my back pocket for when I need a confidence boost. If you ever misplace your child momentarily, it guarantees that any friend having a rough day will feel like a parenting pro in comparison.
6. Post Relatable Updates on Social Media
On platforms like Facebook, I steer clear of overly perfect posts. Instead of sharing how my kids love to clean up, I opt for relatable content like, “Ugh, lice again!” or “Why can’t I stop gaining weight?” This way, I keep it real and relatable for my friends.
7. Stop Cleaning Your Car
Minivans are meant for spills and crumbs! Once I stopped worrying about keeping mine spotless, my friends felt more at ease. It also helped prevent any jealousy among those still driving smaller cars.
8. Wear PJs Everywhere
There’s something liberating about seeing fellow moms rocking their pajamas in public. When I spot someone in SpongeBob pajama pants at school drop-off, it brings a smile to my face. Embrace the comfy life, and you’ll be a great friend!
9. Leave a Few Floaters
I always make sure to have a few surprises in the guest restroom. Nothing boosts a friend’s confidence quite like discovering a little extra in the toilet! It’s all in good fun and fosters a sense of camaraderie.
Some of these tips may be easier to adopt than others, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself becoming a better friend!
