I dream of a place where my son, Jamie, is just one among many, where each individual is celebrated for their unique qualities. In this realm, differences are not labeled as disabilities, special needs, or developmental delays; instead, they are embraced as part of what makes us human. Here, quirks would go unnoticed, and the focus would be on the kindness in our hearts and our capacity for empathy.
In this imagined world, we would find joy in the simplest moments—like watching a child delight in chasing bubbles on a sunny spring afternoon—without being bogged down by deadlines, bills, or worries about health. It’s a land where everyone can put down their phones to join in their child’s adventure, imitating the fluttering of a whimsical butterfly, fully immersed in the experience of wonder.
I envision a society where skin color is as inconsequential as the shade of someone’s socks. A community where love creates families, irrespective of societal norms or governmental views. Here, the kindness we show to one another would be recognized and celebrated, while the price of our handbags or shoes would fade into the background.
