I Am More Than Just a Mom

We’ve all experienced that moment when we realize our parents are not just our caregivers, but individuals with their own stories. Maybe it hit you when you overheard them discussing the “birds and the bees,” or perhaps during a family gathering where your uncles playfully embarrassed your mom with a little too much spiked iced tea. It’s in those awkward instances that we come to understand our parents are just people, and not so different from us after all.

This realization has me thinking about my own kids and the inevitable day when they might feel a hint of embarrassment about their mom. Right now, they adore me—I’m their hero, their confidante, their everything. It’s heartwarming, delightful, and honestly, a bit exhausting, too! But I know the clock is ticking, and one day they might prefer me to drop them off a few blocks away, avoiding the risk of being seen together. I can only hope that once the teenage years pass, they’ll see me as a person again and want to spend time with me.

To help pave the way for that future, I’ve been considering some ways to remind them that I’m more than just their mother:

Dear kiddos,

  • As I learned about my own parents: You didn’t come from a stork. Do the math!
  • Sure, I’m getting older, but I can still bring my moves to the dance floor. I might be grooving to different tunes when I’m older, but I’ll always jam to classics like “Baby Got Back.”
  • My apprehensions about you heading off to college come from my own escapades, like that time I polished off a bottle of Hawkeye Vodka while attempting to write a Philosophy paper. Spoiler alert: we didn’t ace it.
  • Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny all share the same handwriting because…
  • I may not be “allergic” to cats, and that Justin “Beaver” song didn’t stop playing because he went to jail. Sometimes, a little exaggeration is necessary, right?
  • I too hid things from my parents, and guess what? Most of the time, they found out.
  • Yes, I have celebrity crushes, but if you read my blog, you might just discover who they are!
  • Chores like laundry, garbage duty, and scrubbing toilets? Yep, I think they’re a drag too.

Love, your mom.

In summary, while I cherish my role as a mom, I also want my kids to see the unique person I am beyond that title.
