November is here, which means it’s time for pumpkin pie, cozy sweaters, and a whole lot of shopping frenzy. But this month also holds a special significance: it’s National Adoption Month. Celebrating the joy of children finding their forever families alongside the season of gratitude? That’s something I truly appreciate.
As a parent of two adopted children, with adoption being a familiar theme in my family, I often find myself bombarded with intrusive questions. While I typically respond with a polite smile and a quick change of subject—“Oh look, it’s time for me to tackle my pesky chin hairs!”—there are some answers I sometimes wish I could share.
1. Can’t you have kids of your own?
Well, I don’t have a uterus, thanks to endometriosis, which claimed some of my key girl parts. Want to hear more about my reproductive health? I’d be happy to share!
2. What happened to their real mom?
You mean the mom who gets woken up at 5 AM for cereal requests? Seems pretty real to me! But hey, let’s talk about your “real” hair color while we’re at it.
3. How much did they cost?
They were actually free! Just don’t ask me about the outrageous shipping charges. And speaking of costs, how much did you shell out for that flashy SUV?
4. Do you know Angelina Jolie?
Of course! Just yesterday, I said, “Angie, we need to grab some wine and cheese dip after yoga!” Because that’s exactly what famous adoptive parents do, right?
5. Why did you adopt from China instead of your own country?
Well, I adopted from my own species—how about you? What about those shoes made in Indonesia?
6. Now that you’ve adopted, are you going to get pregnant?
Oh, we’re still on the topic of my reproductive system? Fun! See the first answer.
7. Will you tell them they’re adopted?
It depends on how perceptive they are. If they start questioning why two Caucasians have Asian kids, we’ll have that chat around their teenage years—perfect timing for some angst!
And my all-time favorite,
8. You’re a saint for giving those kids a good home.
You bet I am! But enough about me, here come the kids with my beer!

In summary, adoption is a beautiful journey filled with its own set of questions and challenges. While I often find myself wishing to respond candidly to the curious inquiries, I appreciate the opportunity to celebrate my family’s unique story during National Adoption Month.
