9 Productive Tasks to Keep Your Tween Active This Summer

As my son navigated the challenges of third grade, he faced longer days filled with more homework and the intimidating reality of standardized testing. However, by the end of the school year, he felt a sense of pride in his accomplishments, eagerly anticipating summer break.

With just a few swim lessons and some sporadic camp days planned, we decided to keep our summer schedule relatively free. But there is absolutely no way I’m letting him lounge around all day. I’m not a strict parent; in fact, I like to think of myself as a pretty cool mom. Nonetheless, it’s not healthy for a bright, active 9 ½-year-old to spend all day glued to a screen. Without some guidance, I have no doubt that’s exactly what he’d choose to do.

So, I created a list of chores and household projects for him to tackle. He already has daily responsibilities like clearing the table and organizing his room, but this list is more comprehensive and will help him become a genuine contributor to our household. Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:

  1. Declutter for a Yard Sale
It’s time to clear out the clutter. We’re going through every nook and cranny in our home to get rid of items we no longer need. In years past, I would handle this process solo, but this year my tween is getting involved. The bonus? He gets to keep the profits from what he sells.
  2. Babysitting Duties
While I’m around, I want to be able to leave my younger son in the care of his older brother. They can have fun together, and my tween is more than capable of keeping them entertained for a short while, allowing me to tackle my own tasks.
  3. Family Photo Archiving
My dad recently sent me a couple of boxes filled with old family photos as he downsizes. Sorting through these pictures and deciding what to keep or send to my sister will be a big project, and it’s a great opportunity for my tween to learn and get involved.
  4. Cleaning Baseboards and Walls
There are those chores that often get neglected, mainly because they’re tedious. Luckily, my kids love the idea of using warm, soapy water and rags. It’s a win-win situation!
  5. Meal Prep Skills
This year, my son mastered making his own cereal and juice, which was a delight. This summer, I’m encouraging him to take it further by making his own sandwiches for lunch—and maybe even one for me!
  6. Yard Work Assistance
Sweeping leaves, watering plants, and pulling weeds are not only great exercise but also teach responsibility. Plus, it saves my back from all that bending!
  7. Car Washing
My kids love splashing around with buckets of soapy water, so why not channel that enthusiasm into washing the car? It’s a fun way for them to help out while enjoying the outdoors.
  8. Sewing Projects
My son learned the basics of sewing at a young age and still enjoys mending clothes. I’m excited for him to tackle the pile of clothing that needs some TLC on my dresser.
  9. Handyman Skills
Both of my boys are curious about how things function, so this summer, I’m teaching my tween some basic handyman tasks like changing lightbulbs and assembling furniture. It’ll boost his confidence, especially when he sees his new bookcase come together.

I know that not every moment will go as planned. I’m far from a perfect parent, and neither are my kids, but maintaining a positive approach should help us succeed. My son has even helped brainstorm some of the tasks, making it easier for him to stay engaged.

These chores are about more than just keeping my son busy or off the couch; they’re about instilling a sense of responsibility and pride in contributing to our family. And let’s be honest, if he doesn’t pitch in, there will be no video games, ice cream, or trips to the pool!
