How Global Volunteering Transformed One Family’s Life for Good
Are you a fan of inspiring journeys like Eat Pray Love and Wild? Then you’ll be captivated by this family’s incredible experience.
Jake Anderson found himself feeling stuck in life. His two-decade marriage was struggling, his 17-year-old son was preparing to fly the coop, and his 14-year-old daughter seemed lost in her digital universe. Wanting to reconnect with his family, Jake envisioned an adventure that would take them around the globe, but he worried about the financial burden of such an endeavor.
That’s when he had a lightbulb moment: why not volunteer as a family to help fund their travels? “Many people dream of a world journey but find it hard to envision how to make it a reality,” said Anderson. “Once we explored the options for volunteering abroad, we realized it was much more achievable and budget-friendly,” he shared with the Portland (Maine) Press-Herald. (See the full story here.)
The Andersons’ journey led them to a variety of enriching experiences, from a monkey sanctuary in Costa Rica to an organic farm in New Zealand and an orphanage in India. Their adventure may not have provided much downtime, but it created opportunities for them to confront personal challenges and strengthen their family bond.
