Step aside, Dadbod—there’s a new trend in town: #Grannyhair. This unique hairstyle involves young women purposefully dying their hair gray, transforming what was once a sign of aging into a bold fashion statement. This striking look has made its way from the runway to celebrities like Bella, Zara, and Mia, all of whom have experimented with this trend.
Why is Gray Hair Suddenly So Popular?
I’ve come up with a few theories:
- Irony: “Hey everyone! Isn’t it ironic that I’ve colored my beautiful, bouncy hair gray, like a senior citizen? Even though I’m clearly not one?”
- Extreme Blonderexia: It was only a matter of time. You can only bleach your hair to a certain point (I can relate!). Starting with a few sun-kissed highlights, you might eventually find yourself sporting platinum locks. Before you know it, you’ve stripped away every last hint of color, leaving you with a soft, grayish-white mane and the necessity for endless conditioner.
- Comfort in Home Decor: I unwittingly painted every room in my house various shades of gray this summer—light gray, charcoal, and slate. Apparently, this is the latest design trend that many are drawn to!
- The Nail Polish Effect: Once upon a time, there were only four nail polish colors: red, pink, coral, and beige. Fast forward to today, and those shades are hardly ever chosen. Look at any group of women in sandals, and you’ll see a rainbow of blues, grays, greens, and purples. Much like the diversity in nail colors, hair dye options have expanded beyond the traditional blonde, brunette, and red to include vibrant hues, and yes, even gray!
Regardless of the reasons behind this trend, I find myself fully supporting it. Unlike skinny jeans, this is one fashion statement I can get behind. Just imagine the savings on salon visits if this trend takes off—I’m already dreaming about how to spend that extra cash!
Long live #grannyhair!
