Dear Excited for Summer Mom,

happy babyself insemination kit

You, the one delighting in “Just five more days until school’s out!” with sheer joy. I regret to inform you that we can no longer be friends. We may still grab a drink together, but I must remove you from my friend list.

Your enthusiasm for the happy dance, long sun-soaked days at the beach with your kids, spontaneous family outings, and the glorious absence of schedules is truly overwhelming. It’s only been two hours since the school bell rang, and I’m already eyeing the wine bottle.

4:32 PM

“Mommy, how long is a garden stick? Is it the same as a tape measure?”
“Mommy, I’m going to clip this tape measure to my belt loop like this. See? You’re not looking… How can you say ‘I see’?”
“And Mommy, please don’t tell Daddy when he comes home; I want to surprise him!”

Or there’s the child glued to the TV watching “Dog with a Blog,” yet somehow still manages to sneak glances at what I’m doing.

4:35 PM

“Mommy, why are you writing about me?”
“Mommy, why did you put a question mark there?”
“Mommy, can you put more cereal in a bag for me?”
“Mommy, I’m going to do my homework now. After the cereal, can I also have a drink?”
“Before you say something like ‘are your legs broken’ or ‘did you forget where the refrigerator is,’ it’s not funny. I’m in the middle of my show! So, pleEEzzzee get me a drink?”
“Mommy, are you writing about me in your blog?”

Did I mention this little chatterbox is almost eight years old? What was I thinking when I decided to send him to speech therapy at two and a half because he wasn’t talking enough?

4:39 PM

He then turns to his older (and quieter) brother, who is absorbed in his iPad (the ultimate babysitter).
“What’s the score? What app are you playing? Do you think Daddy can download that for me?”

The oldest chimes in as the youngest has taken to measuring EVERYTHING in the house, including his brother.
“Stop! You’re being annoying!”
“Stop measuring my foot and my head.”
“Stop measuring Wilsey.”
“Stop!”
“I said STOP!!”
“Mommy!”
“MomMY!”
“Momm..yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!”

So, to all the parents who are eager for those long, lazy summer days: Enjoy them. I simply cannot comprehend your joy, but I will gladly send my eight-year-old your way so you can join me in reaching for that wine glass. Me? I will be doing the happy dance come September.
