In the weeks leading up to my son’s graduation from fifth grade, friends kept asking me if I was feeling sad about the school year coming to an end. My answer was always a resounding No! I’m ready for summer! With visions of leisurely mornings in pajamas and the prospect of stashing lunch boxes away for a few months, I felt a sense of relief.
Then came this past week, packed with celebrations: robotics team get-togethers, safety patrol parties, and the exclusive fifth-grade kickball game. I watched his teacher, Mr. Thompson, racing alongside the children, laughing as they tried to tag him out. It was heartwarming to see the joy shared between them.
The culmination was last Friday’s fifth-grade party, featuring cosmic bowling, a chorus of fifth-grade girls belting out Taylor Swift songs in matching neon shirts, and a photo booth reminiscent of my niece’s Sweet 16. It brought back memories of when I initially hesitated to join my son in a photo booth during his kindergarten year. This time, however, I took the initiative and asked my tall, growing boy to step away from his friends for a moment to capture a memory with me. In the blink of an eye, he has transformed from that little boy into a more independent child.
Recent events in our world have underscored how vital teachers like Mr. Thompson are in our children’s lives. They truly embody the spirit of protection and care. I’ve seen their bravery during crises, when they risk everything to keep students safe. The thought of a teacher worrying about their own child while caring for others is profound. It’s a reminder of the shared humanity we all have.
So, thank you. Those two words hardly encapsulate my gratitude, but they’re all I have. Thank you for nurturing my son’s curiosity and love for learning. Thank you for the dance parties, the reading breaks, and the encouragement to explore beyond the standard curriculum. Your high expectations coupled with understanding made such a difference. I’ll always remember the day you sent me a picture of him on a field trip, knowing I was miles away. Your simple message, “We’re having a great day,” brought me comfort.
Tomorrow, my son, the little boy I once tearfully dropped off at preschool, will graduate from elementary school. While he’s not fully grown, he is on the path to becoming a young man. I feel a sense of urgency, realizing these moments are fleeting. This past year has been filled with laughter, learning, and growth, all thanks to you. I’m hopeful for what lies ahead in middle school; change can be daunting, but I believe he will adapt.
Thank you for your patience, humor, and dedication. Most importantly, thank you for allowing him to express himself and for loving him just as he is. He was fortunate to have you as a teacher—so were we.
What I Actually Said to Mr. Thompson at Graduation:
“Thank you, have a wonderful summer!”
