I might have started my journey in Canada and spent some time in Illinois, but my heart truly belongs to Wisconsin, where I picked up essential life lessons that shaped who I am today.
Stop Your Complaining.
While Midwesterners are often recognized for their kindness, they also know how to keep a stiff upper lip when the going gets tough. Picture this: when a hefty 31-inch snowstorm hits on Halloween, Wisconsin parents aren’t about to cancel the festivities. It might take a bit longer to trick-or-treat, but trudging through snow drifts while dressed as a superhero is all part of the adventure, right? And let’s not forget the trusty snow thrower in the garage—what else would it be for besides clearing a path for the little ones?
It’s ‘Pop,’ Not ‘Soda.’
Honestly, who says “soda”? It’s all about “pop” in Wiskahnsin, no exceptions!
Wisconsin’s Seasons.
In Wisconsin, we have four distinct seasons: Packers, Brewers, Packers, and Christmas Lights! December deserves its own shout-out, as we temporarily set sports aside to deck our homes with dazzling light displays that could rival the sun. And yes, we love our plastic lawn ornaments, especially the ones depicting deer indulging in imaginary snacks.
A Strong Work Ethic.
Graduates from the University of Wisconsin (go Badgers!) and nearby colleges are highly sought after in major cities like New York and San Francisco. Why? Because they bring a solid work ethic to the table. They’re eager to help, whether that’s fetching coffee or managing spreadsheets, and they understand that hard work leads to success over time. No one from Wisconsin boasts about hitting the big time before turning 30; we just focus on getting the job done.
More Cheese, Please.
When life gets tough, a slice of sharp cheddar can work wonders. For those particularly challenging days, we might even reach for some comforting Swiss. Trust me on this one!
Water Skiing is a Must.
If you can’t water ski on one of Wisconsin’s 15,000 lakes, you might want to reconsider your status! Family outings involve camping, campfires, and lots of s’mores—so if you’re struggling to stay upright on skis, it’s time to practice.
Respect for Elders.
Wisconsinites tend to honor their parents and elders, which is evident in the way kids interact with adults. Those mega-churches might be plentiful, but they surely instill a sense of respect that resonates throughout the community.
Cow Tipping—A Right of Passage.
Not everyone in Wisconsin lives on a farm, but there’s usually one not too far away. Yes, cow tipping has been known to happen, especially among bored teens after Friday night football games. But please, don’t try this at home!
Friday Night Fish Fry.
No matter where you are in Wisconsin—be it Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Madison, or Green Bay—Friday night means fish fry time. Gather the family for some deep-fried cod and crispy potato sticks, preferably at a bustling local establishment. If you’re in Sun Prairie, Buck & Honey’s comes highly recommended!
Brats are King.
In Wisconsin, “brats” (pronounced brahts) are beloved sausages, best enjoyed with a generous helping of sauerkraut. Don’t confuse them with hot dogs, or you might just find yourself in hot water!
Beer is Our Other Religion.
If you’re over 18, we’re likely to turn a blind eye when it comes to beer consumption. Just remember to drink responsibly! Beer is woven into the fabric of our culture—it’s about enjoyment and camaraderie. Locally brewed options like Leinenkugel’s and Capital Brewery are favorites, and if you’re in the lovely city of Madison, you can kick back with a refreshing drink while overlooking Lake Mendota.
Many Wisconsinites never leave, and those of us who do always come back, drawn by the charm and warmth of our home state.

Summary:
Growing up in Wisconsin instills unique values and traditions, from a strong work ethic to a love of brats and beer. The warmth and resilience of the Midwestern spirit shine through in everything we do, whether it’s braving a snowstorm or gathering for a Friday fish fry.
