8 Reasons I’m Definitely Cooler Now Than a Decade Ago

As I cruise through my mid-40s, I’ve come to realize that “coolness” is a flexible term. Just the other day, while sorting through my silverware drawer (hang in there, the cool part is coming), I caught myself belting out an alt-rock tune that had been stuck in my head for days. Yes, I know every word. So, here’s a fun look at how I’ve leveled up my cool factor over the past ten years:

  1. I’ve Mastered the Lyrics of Panic! At the Disco
Ten years back, my musical repertoire was dominated by nursery rhymes (seriously, who even had iPods back then?). While I still have a soft spot for childhood favorites, the car rides now feature tunes that don’t revolve around dinosaurs or trains, thanks to my teenagers.
  2. I’ve Figured Out What Not to Wear
In my 30s, I often found myself lost in the fashion wilderness, unsure of what suited a woman my age. Fortunately, having teenage daughters means I get real-time feedback on what’s stylish versus what’s a total disaster. I can’t imagine how moms without this luxury manage to leave the house looking presentable.
  3. I Can Rock Dangly Earrings Anytime
Growing up in the ’80s, I adored oversized earrings, but once my kids came along, I had to retire them for fear of a toddler tugging them off. Now, I can embrace my love for big earrings again while my daughters ensure I don’t go overboard with them.
  4. I Enjoy Shows Like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Mad Men’
I’ve graduated from kiddie shows to binge-watching series that engage my adult brain. Just the other day, a friend mentioned “Umizoomi,” and I nodded along cluelessly, twirling my earrings in delight.
  5. My Bras Are Now Flap-Free
Gone are the days of awkward bras that required a complex maneuver to take off. Now, I have the freedom to remove them without worries from my parenting days.
  6. No More Clothes with Dried Spit-Up
Yes! That’s right. My wardrobe is now spit-up free, and it feels fabulous.
  7. I Read All the Bestsellers (with Words)
Endless hours spent waiting for practices or school pick-ups have turned me into a reading machine. I dive into novels that actually have plots rather than just pictures.
  8. All My Favorite Styles Have Made a Comeback
High-waisted pants? Check. Leggings? Done. Off-the-shoulder tops? Absolutely! I feel like I’ve come full circle in my fashion journey.

All in all, I’ve definitely become more “cool” over the past decade. In fact, I think I was also more stylish in my 30s than in my 20s. Even with my sun-kissed tan and voluminous hair in my teenage years, I was merely a novice at coolness. So, much like fine wine, I’ve matured beautifully with age. I’m excited to see what the next decade holds for me.
