I gently knock on her door, peek inside, and cheekily ask if she remembers she has a mom. She laughs, blows me a kiss, and asks me to close the door as I leave. Ouch! I remember being a teenager myself, wanting to distance myself from my mom. But I like to think I’m a cooler version of her. Deep down, I crave her affection just as much as she cherishes my love.
A few summers ago, I decided to carve out some special mother-daughter moments. Until then, I had always done things with both my kids, but as my son entered high school, he quickly opted out of our “quick” mall runs. There’s something uniquely rewarding about dedicating one-on-one time to each of your children. No need for compromise on activities, and they have your undivided attention. Here are eight fun outings to encourage your teen to step out from her sanctuary this summer and foster lasting memories.
1. Dress-Up Adventure
We gather a selection of dazzling prom or special occasion dresses from the junior’s section of a department store. I capture photos of her trying on each gown, no matter how they look! We started this tradition when she was nine, and it’s become a summer staple.
2. Netflix Binge Session
Rainy afternoons are perfect for curling up under a blanket and indulging in our favorite shows. This creates a wonderful opportunity to discuss friendships, relationships, and important life topics. Recommended shows for teens include Gilmore Girls, Parenthood, and The Wonder Years.
3. Read Together
A couple of summers back, we devoured Wonder by R.J. Palacio, and last summer, we tackled Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume. If reading aloud isn’t your style, consider downloading the OverDrive app to access free audiobooks from your local library. We’ve enjoyed titles like The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series during family road trips.
4. Podcast Listening Party
Navigating the world of podcasts can be tricky due to their candid nature. My daughter, now older, enjoys Gilmore Guys, but she also loves This American Life and TED Radio Hour. Before sharing a podcast, listen to a few episodes to ensure it’s suitable for her age.
5. Get Coordinated Mani/Pedis
My daughter adores bold, dark nail colors while I stick to bright pinks or neutrals. Letting her choose my nail color shows her that I trust her taste and value her opinions.
6. Cook Together
I allow my daughter to pick a unique recipe from a cookbook or online. Together, we shop for ingredients and whip up a meal, ensuring it’s something she’ll enjoy (which usually means a variation of pizza!).
7. Capture Moments in My Wedding Gown
When she was nine, we took photos of her wearing my wedding gown. These pictures are some of my most treasured memories.
8. Start a Mother-Daughter Journal
Meredith and Sophie Jacobs created Just Between Us: A No-Stress, No-Rules Journal for Girls and Their Moms, a fill-in-the-blank journal packed with prompts like, “I often dream about…” and “My biggest regret….” This journal has opened up countless conversations, allowing me to understand her better.
I hope my daughter looks back on our summers with fond memories of me as a vibrant, engaged mom. I aspire for her to feel comfortable sharing with me as she grows, fostering a bond that lasts into adulthood. I want to be the Lorelai to her Rory (or the Sarah to her Amber)—BFFs forever!
