Dear Stay-at-Home Mom,
Hello! I’m a working mom, and I want to take a moment to connect with you. While we may seem different at first glance, I truly believe we share more similarities than we realize. Yet, online discussions often turn into a competition over who has it tougher.
In my view, motherhood is a collaboration, a team sport where we lean on each other. To foster that sense of community we all crave, it’s essential that we understand one another better. So, here are a few insights about me as a working mom:
- I recognize your hard work. I’ve experienced what it’s like to be home with my child during weekends, and let me tell you, it’s exhausting even with help. I admire the dedication you pour into managing everything for your little ones and maintaining the household. It’s no small feat!
- My job isn’t a break. I have responsibilities that keep me on my toes with clients, deadlines, and a constant pressure to perform. I often skip lunch just to stay ahead of my workload, all while bracing for that dreaded call from daycare saying, “Your child is unwell; please come pick her up.” I put in extra effort so I can be available when that call comes.
- I long for your friendship. I see your posts about playdates and activities with other moms, and I can’t help but feel a bit envious of the connections you’re building. As a working mom, it’s challenging for me to cultivate that community. So, if you see me at the park in my work attire, please know that I’m there for the same reasons as you: to spend precious time with my child before heading home to cook dinner.
- I’m a full-time mom, too. Just because I clock in at an office doesn’t mean I’m not dedicated to my role as a mother. I’m actively involved in my child’s education and health care, and I strive to plan quality family time whenever possible. My motherhood journey also includes providing for my family financially.
- Choosing my career doesn’t mean I chose it over my child. This is something that weighs heavily on me. Unlike my husband, I often face judgment for working. I contribute to our family’s finances because we need it, and I also have a passion for my career. I’m proud to be part of the movement advocating for better maternity benefits and equal opportunities for women, ensuring a brighter future for our daughters, and, yes, for your daughter too.
Let’s embrace our similarities and complement each other rather than focus on our differences. Together, we can create a supportive environment for our children, helping them navigate a world that offers them more options than we had.
Let’s unite as a team. I promise to bring the snacks! And I’m eager to hear what you’d like me to understand as well.
