Returning Home from a Child-Free Getaway: The Struggles Are Real
I know that someday I’ll find myself feeling nostalgic about the little treasures around my home, like a drawer filled with “googly eyes.” I’m aware that the absence of mismatched sports gear piled up in the garage will evoke bittersweet memories when my kids grow up and leave the nest. But let me tell you—today is definitely not that day.
This morning kicked off with a delightful wake-up call of “Hello, 4:30 a.m.! Thanks, jet lag!” It was one of those mornings where I felt like I accomplished more before 8 a.m. than some people do all day. The mantra of the day? “My cleanliness standards are clearly not the same as yours.”
After being back home from my delightful vacation with my partner for merely 17 hours (and 12 of those were spent sleeping), I was already feeling the urge to escape. The late morning was filled with the all-too-frequent “Stop bickering, I don’t want to wish away your childhood!” while the afternoon was punctuated with the desperate thought, “How about we put things AWAY once we’re done…ALL THE WAY AWAY?”
The mid-afternoon outing was a test of patience, as I contemplated the possibility of crashing the car if the screeching continued. The day also featured the perplexing question, “Why is there always poop in the toilet every time I need to use it?” and a firm refusal to engage with snack-time inquiries.
By the time evening rolled around, it became clear that I was on the brink of losing my mind—again. Dinner was a battle over spinach, followed by the endless “Brush your teeth, please. Seriously, did you brush your teeth?” routine at bedtime.
I genuinely believe there will come a time when I’ll miss the chaotic sounds of tiny feet racing around in the early hours. I know that’s true. But today, the day after I returned from a blissful getaway in Amsterdam, is most certainly not that day.

In summary, the transition from a carefree vacation back to the daily chaos of parenting is no small feat. While I know I’ll cherish these moments in the future, today’s challenges remind me of the beauty and struggle of motherhood.
