Dear Emma,
Soon, you’ll be embarking on the exciting adventure of middle school! Right now, you’re buzzing with anticipation about new friends, experiences, and the feeling of growing up a bit more. I share your excitement and can’t wait to witness your growth during this important chapter of your life.
However, I’ll be honest—I’m also a bit anxious. I’ve heard countless stories about teens facing tough decisions, giving in to peer pressure, and using social media in ways that might not be wise. You’ve probably heard some of these stories, too. I want to believe you’re too smart to fall into those traps, but I won’t be that naïve parent who ignores the reality of adolescence.
As the oldest, this journey is uncharted for both of us. We are all learning to navigate the waters of puberty, middle school, and high school together. There will be moments of calm and times when the waves get rough. Throughout it all, here are some important pieces of advice to keep in mind. If you ever feel lost or frightened, just remember I’m right here with you, ready to help you steer through the challenges.
- Prioritize Education: Schoolwork should always come first. Everything else—sports, friendships, and hobbies—is secondary. I don’t expect perfection, but I do hope you’ll give your best effort. You’ll feel proud of yourself when you do.
- Embrace Courage: New experiences are waiting for you, and some will be challenging. Be brave when faced with tough choices, and stand up for your beliefs, even if it means being seen as “uncool.” That bravery will leave a lasting impact.
- Stay True to Yourself: You are one-of-a-kind and wonderful just as you are. Never feel pressured to change yourself just to fit in. If others can’t see your greatness, that’s their loss.
- Trust Your Instincts: When faced with peer pressure, listen to your gut. We’ve taught you the difference between right and wrong; trust what you know in your heart.
- Get Organized: Life is only going to get busier from here. Start learning how to manage your time effectively. Avoid procrastination. These habits will benefit you not just in middle school, but throughout your life.
- Show Kindness: Adolescence can be awkward for everyone. Remember that everyone is battling their own struggles. Treat others with the respect you wish to receive, even when it’s not the popular choice.
- Believe in Yourself: You are amazing. Don’t ever forget that. You have the power to achieve anything you set your mind to and make a difference in the world.
- Choose Your Friends Wisely: An old saying goes, “You are no better than the company you keep.” Surround yourself with people who uplift you, not those who bring negativity or pressure you to change.
- Count on Our Love: Your dad and I are always here for you. There’s nothing you can say or do that will change our love for you. If you have questions, we’ll help find answers. If you face challenges, we’ll guide you. If you’re overjoyed, we’ll celebrate with you. Just reach out—we’re never too busy to listen.
- Enjoy the Journey: You are on the verge of discovering so much. While there will be bumps along the way, there’s also a lot to cherish. Smile, laugh, make new friends, and soak in every moment of this incredible phase. Trust me, it will pass by quicker than you think!
