What Happened to Good Manners?

Every time I check the news or browse social media, I encounter a barrage of distressing stories showcasing the worst of human behavior. It’s disheartening, to say the least. Why is this happening? Some speculate it’s due to environmental issues like pesticides or acid rain, while others wonder if GMOs are affecting our brains. Could it be a decline in religious values? What on Earth is going on?

The answer, quite simply, is manners. Yes, it all comes down to a significant lack of basic courtesy.

Rude individuals seem to be multiplying, and it’s genuinely alarming. Soon, we might find ourselves living in a world devoid of kindness—who wants that? I certainly don’t!

When I mention manners, I’m not merely referring to the failure to say “please” or “thank you” or even the art of a proper handshake, although I wish more people would learn that skill! I’m talking about the person who allows a door to slam in a child’s face without a second thought. I mean someone who won’t let a struggling mother with a stroller go ahead in line.

Consider the individual who watches someone stumble and fall but chooses not to help because it would take too much time. These are the same people who interrupt conversations, show disrespect, and think it’s okay to disregard common courtesy. They act as though they have the right to take from others without so much as a nod of appreciation.

Entitlement and rudeness are the real culprits behind our societal decline.

I get it; we are all incredibly busy. Life can feel like a race we’re barely keeping up with. Parenting is tough, and it requires effort to teach our children to respect others and practice good manners. But that’s no excuse to neglect our responsibility to raise considerate kids.

Remember, the world doesn’t revolve around you and your little ones. Children are inherently self-centered, and it’s our job to teach them that other people’s feelings and comfort matter too. If you’re not willing to instill these values at home, then it falls to the rest of us.

Perhaps we all need to step up our game. We can remind those who forget to practice good manners. Maybe if we band together to spread kindness, we can create an environment where everyone is treated with respect, regardless of their differences. Holding the door for someone, no matter who they are, is a small act that goes a long way.

I refuse to accept a world filled with rudeness, and I believe you feel the same way. I’m committed to doing my part—let’s encourage each other in this mission! If you see my children being impolite, please feel free to remind them about manners, and I promise to do the same for yours.

Please and thank you!
