The 13 Best Aspects of Raising a 13-Year-Old Girl

My daughter just celebrated her 13th birthday last month. While I’d love to share some memories from her special day, I know I’d probably miss the mark.

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached this milestone. Time flew by; one moment she was taking her first steps, and now she’s declaring that I “hate her” and think she’s “fat and ugly.” Ah, the joys of parenting!

To commemorate her transition into teenage life, here are 13 of the most delightful aspects of raising a 13-year-old girl:

1. I no longer have to keep track of everything, which is useful since apparently, I “just don’t even know” anything anymore.
2. Listening to today’s pop music serves as a reminder of how much better past music was. Seriously, any song from any era sounds like a masterpiece compared to what’s out there now.
3. I’m relieved I no longer have to use the word “even” because I constantly hear “don’t even” instead.
4. I’ve gained a personal fashion critic at home. I didn’t realize how much I needed one, but it turns out having a daughter who critiques my wardrobe is quite the experience!
5. My cooking skills are on the rise. Thankfully, my fashion critic also critiques my culinary creations, offering feedback on how I can improve. I’m focusing on mastering terms like “ugh,” “fine,” “’kay,” and “whatevs.”
6. I’ve become an expert negotiator. My tactics have evolved from “If I count to three…” to “Could someone pour me a glass of Merlot?”
7. I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for logical reasoning.
8. I managed to cancel our cable subscription. I get more drama from her recounting a five-minute segment about study hall than an entire season of The Walking Dead ever provided.
9. I’m getting my steps in! I spend so much time at the mall holding different clothing options while my daughter responds with “no,” “ick,” “seriously, Mom,” and “of course you’d like that.” My calves are definitely thanking me.
10. I have a built-in tech support system. My daughter is always ready to show me how to use my iPhone before I even realize I need assistance.
11. I’m uncovering hidden talents I never knew I had. For instance, I can elicit 25 different moods from her in less than 5 seconds!
12. I’m learning a new form of communication. Eye rolls, door slams, foot stomps, and heavy sighs create an entire conversation.
13. My heart swells with pride every day. Despite the challenges she brings, she is an incredible joy in my life.

All jokes aside, she’s a wonderful young lady whom I cherish deeply. I’m confident that in a few years, once she’s okay with being seen with me again, she’ll wrap her arms around me and share how much I mean to her.
