When it comes to Disney guidebooks, there’s no shortage of options—from tips for kids to dining guides and even resources tailored for runners. However, prior to the release of Emma Thompson’s “Magic for All,” there was a notable absence of guides specifically designed for families with unique needs.

Emma, a former Disney cast member and mother to two children, including a son on the autism spectrum, was taken aback by the limited resources available for families navigating the parks with disabilities. “I was frustrated that I couldn’t find the information I needed online, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and write this book to help others in similar situations,” Emma shared with us. “It was important to me that our community had a voice in the conversation.”

Originally conceived as a resource focused on autism, Thompson’s guide expands to encompass a wide range of disabilities, including developmental delays, sensory sensitivities, mobility challenges, food allergies, service animals, hearing impairments, and various medical needs. Drawing from her extensive experience spanning over 25 visits to Disney, Emma collaborated with families, Disney staff, and cast members to compile valuable insights. She also encourages readers to provide feedback on her website, “Magic for All,” to ensure the guide remains comprehensive and helpful.

“Disney is indeed accessible, but not every aspect is friendly for all abilities,” Emma explained. “For instance, some lines are too narrow for electric mobility scooters, necessitating a transfer to a provided wheelchair. While certain attractions may require assistance to board, there are also rides that allow guests to remain in their wheelchairs.”

When it comes to accommodations, Emma points out that some Disney resorts are more accessible than others. “I particularly recommend the Caribbean Resort for its pool and convenient bus access, while I would advise against choosing Disney’s Boardwalk if accessibility is a priority.”

For parents who may be concerned about whether Disney can cater to their family’s needs, Emma reassures them that adjustments can be made for a magical experience. “While everything may not be perfect, it can still be enchanting,” she emphasized. “It may take extra planning and perhaps some noise-canceling headphones, but Disney prides itself on exceptional customer service, striving to meet everyone’s requirements.”

To help children prepare for their Disney adventure, Emma suggests showing them videos of the attractions, resorts, and parks beforehand. “This will provide them with a better understanding of what to expect, like that Mickey is not the size of an ordinary mouse and some rides may be dark.”
