“Mommy, I want to be just like you.”
These heartfelt words, uttered by my little one, are a dream come true for any mother. However, the truth is that living up to such a high standard can be quite daunting. I have four little pairs of eyes that watch me closely each day, observing everything I do. They see me managing challenges with poise, but they also witness my moments of frustration when patience runs thin.
Those little eyes have witnessed my so-called heroic deeds, like the times I rushed to their side after a bike tumble or when they scraped their knees while racing down the sidewalk. In those moments, I felt like a superhero, but they’ve also seen me at my most vulnerable, struggling and sometimes feeling completely overwhelmed.
Every day, those little eyes gaze at me with admiration, proud to call me “Mommy.” Yet, I know they also look at me with disappointment when I can’t fulfill all their desires or demands. They have watched me stumble, complain, and nearly give up when times are tough. Yet, I hope they also see how I push through my limits and strive for success, and I pray they recognize the size of my dreams and faith.
Since the moment my first child was placed in my arms, I became their role model, a caretaker, and a constant source of support, available every hour of every day. So when my daughter said she wanted to be just like me when she grows up, I knelt down, looked her in the eyes, kissed her nose, and with tears streaming down my cheeks, I told her, “Sweetheart, I want you to be yourself as you grow. Don’t change a thing. Just… be… you.”
