As my children transition into their teenage years and prepare for college, I find that my aspirations for them remain as vibrant as they were when they first began preschool. However, my focus has shifted; I now prioritize meaningful experiences over societal achievements, financial success, or advanced degrees.
Like many young adults today, they have their own adventurous bucket list filled with dreams of traveling to far-off places, swimming with sharks, trekking the Appalachian Trail, and learning new languages. But my vision for them is quite different. I envision a “compassionate adventure list” — a collection of selfless acts of bravery and kindness that can be just as transformative as any thrill-seeking endeavor.
Here are the experiences I hope they will pursue throughout their lives, not just once but repeatedly:
- Stand up against bullying and support someone in need, even if they are a stranger.
- Advocate for the elderly and protect them from exploitation.
- Thank a veteran face-to-face for their service by shaking their hand.
- Offer to pay for a person’s groceries when they struggle to afford them.
- Celebrate Thanksgiving by serving meals to those in need instead of hosting a lavish dinner.
- Provide someone’s first job opportunity.
- Help nervous new parents by babysitting their little ones.
- Defend the free speech rights of those with whom they disagree.
- Dedicate a vacation to volunteering for a cause they care about.
- Coach a youth sports team before they have children of their own.
- Cover someone’s layaway for Christmas gifts.
- Assist a motorist in changing a flat tire.
- Mow a neighbor’s unkempt lawn as a surprise.
- Support a friend in leaving an unhealthy relationship.
- Give a break to a weary caregiver, even if they feel tired themselves.
- Offer your seat on public transport to a soldier, expectant mother, or disabled person.
- Allow stressed individuals to cut in line frequently.
- Always leave generous tips, especially for those working the night shift.
- Show appreciation with thoughtful gifts for those who clean their workplaces and homes.
- Regularly call aging family members just to say “hello.”
- Sing at a local nursing home and bring joy to the residents.
- Never hesitate to do the right thing, even if it means bending the rules.
- Avoid hoarding wealth; live generously.
- Honor the dying wishes of loved ones.
Imagine how much brighter our world could be if more individuals devoted themselves to such meaningful pursuits instead of merely chasing personal thrill-seeking adventures. The potential for positive change is staggering!
