Now, merely weeks later, we find ourselves working to recover from catastrophic flooding that has devastated our region. In my neighborhood, a blue ribbon tied to a nearly submerged mailbox stands as a symbol of our ongoing struggle; we have not fully healed from one crisis before confronting another. However, true to our resilient spirit, Louisiana is rising to the occasion, fueled by the strength of its communities.
Following the police tragedy, our community rallied like never before, launching support and fundraising initiatives to help the families of the fallen officers. The outpouring of compassion was remarkable. Now, in the wake of this severe flooding, we are witnessing that same commitment. In Livingston Parish, where I live, about 90% of homes were affected by water damage, and many businesses remain closed. Yet, amidst these challenges, the spirit of community is once again shining brightly.

Our local sheriff’s deputies, facing their own losses, continue to work tirelessly while their families find refuge in temporary housing.
Louisiana has always been famed for its community spirit, but it is during times of crisis that this quality truly shines. My parents, who lead a large church, opened their gym to provide shelter for those who had nowhere else to turn. Without being asked, community members sprang into action to support this effort.
