This past weekend, something more elusive than a peaceful night’s sleep with a toddler happened. Seven of my closest friends and I ditched our kids and partners for an exhilarating moms’ escape. Sure, “escape” was just a short 15-minute drive to a downtown hotel, but it felt like a world away.

Since becoming a mother 18 months ago, I’ve built an invaluable network of fellow moms. These incredible women are my lifeline during the chaos of teething, tantrums, and sleepless nights, always ready with advice, encouragement, and sometimes even a glass of wine to share. Being a stay-at-home mom can feel lonely, making a supportive group of friends essential. They don’t judge my glass of wine at night or my guilty pleasure for binge-watching reality TV. Whether I choose to let my child cry it out or indulge her penchant for cheese and bananas, they remind me that it’s perfectly okay. While we see each other nearly every week, a whole weekend away from our kids was a rare treat we had been planning for months. Somehow, we all managed to make it for at least one night.

You might be imagining a raucous weekend akin to a scene from a comedy film, complete with wild nights and drinks that would make us blush in front of the kids. But, you’d be mistaken. The weekend turned out to be everything we hoped for, and it was enlightening to discover each mom’s unique style of traveling. Let’s break them down:

1. The Survivalist Mom

This mom arrives with enough supplies to last a month. “Prepared” doesn’t even begin to cover it. She comes equipped with a first-aid kit, cleaning supplies, and enough snacks to feed a small army. Traveling with her is a blessing, especially if you’re the next mom on our list.

2. The Simple Pack Mom

With just a change of clothes crammed into her purse, this mom embodies simplicity. She packed in a hurry and may have forgotten something, inevitably needing to borrow from the Survivalist Mom. But that’s no problem—her friend has everything covered.

3. The Perpetual Mom

This mom can’t switch off her maternal instincts. She’s the one double-checking for lost items and ensuring everyone has visited the restroom before heading out. At dinner, she might find herself cutting your food without realizing it. Throughout the trip, she’ll miss her kids and check in back home more than once.

4. The Fashionable Mom

Showing up flawlessly styled while others are in casual attire, this mom has a knack for looking fabulous no matter the occasion. She’s the go-to for makeup advice and effortlessly rocks chic outfits, leaving everyone secretly envious of her wardrobe.

5. The Organizer Mom

The mastermind behind the trip, this mom plans activities and crafts, books accommodations, and makes sure every detail is covered. Without her, the getaway might not have even happened. Her organizational skills are a true asset to the group.

6. The Lightweights Mom

After just one drink, this mom is ready to party! Having spent the past year either pregnant or nursing, this getaway is her chance to unwind and enjoy herself, bringing a fun energy to the group.

7. The Juggling Mom

The busy bee of the group, this mom is constantly balancing work and family. Often late to arrive and the first to leave, she packs quickly, not because she’s minimalist, but because life rarely gives her a moment to breathe.

8. The Sleep-Starved Mom

While all moms are sleep-deprived, this mom takes full advantage of the getaway to catch up on rest. She’ll likely snooze for hours and relish the opportunity to eat a warm breakfast without sharing it with little ones.

The beauty of a moms’ trip lies in the diversity of personalities, all united by the profound love for their children.

So how did our weekend unfold? We dressed up for a nice dinner, but soon found ourselves back at our hotel room, tending to blisters from wearing heels after ages. We laughed, shared stories, and spent the night crafting and sipping wine. Despite our initial intentions to escape our children, it was stories about them that truly brought us together.
