Why I’ve Lost Trust in the GOP

I have three admissions to make, and I hope you’ll bear with me as I share them. This year has been a tumultuous one for me, heavy with thoughts that have left me feeling conflicted. In a landscape filled with political chaos, I recognize that my honesty may not earn me any popularity points, and I understand why.

So here goes.

I am a person of faith, and I was — until recently — a registered Republican. Ah, what a relief it is to express that. Are you still with me? I appreciate your patience, as I have much more to convey. And yes, my third confession is on the way.

As a believer, my voting choices have always been guided by my principles. I strive to approach complex social issues with empathy and compassion. However, I now find it increasingly difficult to do so within the confines of the Republican Party.

As I observe these politicians, I can’t help but ponder: Are they referencing the same Christ I know? The Jesus I believe in encourages hard work while also advocating for the marginalized and the vulnerable. He would support justice and order, but He would never erect barriers to exclude those seeking refuge. Instead, He actively dismantles walls.

The GOP claims to represent “one nation under God,” yet I can assure you that the essence of Christ’s message has little to do with their political agenda. His teachings revolve around three core tenets: Faith, Hope, and Love.

In this context, Donald Trump’s assertions that he owes nothing to God and has no need for forgiveness stand in stark contrast to true faith. His vision of “making America great again” seems to glorify a time when dissent was met with violence, a far cry from genuine hope. And his tendency to vilify entire communities by labeling them as “evil” or “criminal” is a direct contradiction of love.

Now, it’s time for my final admission.

I am stepping away from the Republican Party. Politicians have taken my faith, twisted it for political gain, and labeled Democrats as “the enemy” in the name of God. While I agree that the world is troubled, their divisive and hateful rhetoric often leads to unrest and violence.

Using the banner of Christ to justify their agenda is a gross distortion of my values and contradicts the inclusive spirit of the Gospel. This is not faith. This is not hope. This is not love. This is a tragic misuse of a beautiful message, and I refuse to support it any longer.

As a Christian, a mother, and a concerned citizen, I feel a moral obligation to cast my vote. And I will, but the idea that Christ is endorsing any single candidate in this election is unsettling. I believe He would be saddened by the current state of affairs.

If the GOP wishes to truly represent Christian voters, they must embrace the essence of Christianity — love for all, not just those who resemble us or share our views. You cannot advocate hate and claim to embody love; those two concepts cannot coexist. Donald Trump’s words reflect what lies at the core of the GOP. Until their discourse aligns more closely with the principles of our faith, I will carry the love of Christ — and my vote — beyond the walls they wish to construct.

In summary, my disillusionment with the GOP stems from its departure from the core principles of faith, hope, and love that should guide our actions and decisions. I choose to prioritize these values as I engage in my civic responsibilities.
