The Inner Thoughts of a 4-Year-Old Preparing for Preschool

Wow, I slept so well! I think I woke up Mom like five times to tell her about the shadows that looked like monsters in my room. I knew it was just the moonlight playing tricks, but maybe she missed me! When she hugged me tight that last time, I felt so loved. She really needs me to keep her company at night.

I had the most amazing dream about a bear and swings in a wobbly house! I have to tell Mom and Dad all about it later; they love hearing my stories. I love talking too! I have so much to share and sing. I’ll start right now.

Today’s a super special day because it’s my first day of preschool! I have to look absolutely fabulous. No way am I wearing that blue dress Mom put out for me. It looked pretty in the store when she said, “Promise you’ll wear it if I buy it?” But now, it just feels sad and I think I can smell her hopes on it. Yuck! Plus, I decided I don’t like blue anymore since yesterday.

I found the best outfit! It’s a big day, so I need wings, gloves, a crown, and all my hair barrettes! Oh, and my Christmas dress with snow boots because why not? The outfit sparkles, and I adore sparkles! It twirls too, and I love to twirl. I feel like a princess, and it’s like all my wishes are coming true. I bet fairies cried to make it, and unicorns are jealous of how awesome I look!

I’m going to make a grand entrance down the stairs like a true princess at a magical ball. That’s what I am!

Oh wow, Mom looks a little rough this morning. I should probably tell her so that it doesn’t happen again. And she looks like she might have a baby in her tummy. I’ll mention it later, maybe when we’re at the grocery store.

She never dresses up, and it makes me sad for her. She always wears black jeans and those old sneakers, even though I’ve seen those bright red high heels in her closet. When I grow up and become a mommy, I’m going to wear ball gowns and wedding dresses every day and those red heels! I won’t let my dreams of being the most beautiful fairy lady ever fade away. Or maybe I’ll be a mermaid; I once saw a really glittery one!

Daddy looks well-rested today. They’ve finally noticed me standing on the stairs, and I’m giving them a shy smile like, “Oh, I didn’t see you there, Mom and Dad! But since you’re here, admire my fabulousness!”

They’re looking at me kind of funny. Mom says, “You look, um, very colorful?” She sounds tired when she says that. “Are you ever going to wear that new dress, or should I take it back?”

I think about the new dress. It did look magical on the hanger. I can tell by her look that I need to be careful with my answer. “Maybe tomorrow?” And then I spin around in my twirly outfit.

Parent note: These moments actually happened! I’m hoping we can channel her creative energy into something amazing, like becoming the next president or a superstar. When we bump into each other in the grocery store—my child in an Elsa costume and yours looking like a circus performer—we’ll share a knowing smile about the chaos that goes into getting out the door.

I see you with your quirky little one. Good luck!
