To the New Wave of Feminists: A Message of Hope and Resilience

I’ve been reflecting on what I could say to uplift you during what must be a heart-wrenching time. While I may not have the perfect words right now, I wanted to reach out before this day concludes.

The part of me that has long championed women’s rights feels like a bitter little creature at this moment. This creature believes that, once again, nothing holds weight against the tide of misogyny. It doesn’t matter that one candidate was more intelligent, qualified, or capable. It doesn’t matter that her minor missteps were dwarfed by his far more significant failings. Ultimately, all that counted was that she was an ambitious woman, and for that, she had to be silenced.

I recognize that many will argue today that her loss stemmed from various factors beyond sexism. However, I firmly believe that if she had been a man with the same issues, victory would have been hers by a landslide. The bitterness lingers.

This is the reality for many feminists right now—overwhelmed by disappointment and anxiety. Yet, as a seasoned feminist, I understand that it’s essential to keep moving forward, despite the setbacks that will undoubtedly come our way. It’s important to allow that bitter little creature to express its sorrow but also to find ways to keep striving onward.

What Does Moving Forward Look Like?

Perhaps it’s continuing to inspire and educate your students, supporting women candidates for local offices, or joining upcoming rallies (and I see many in the future). In the immediate aftermath, it means taking each step forward and not letting hurt hold you back. Though it will be challenging at first—especially when faced with the opinions of Trump supporters—know that with time, it will become easier. Your life will reclaim its rhythm, and that bitter little creature will slowly release its grip on your spirit.

The next few years might not be easy. I don’t have an exact plan for navigating the challenges ahead, but I refuse to be overwhelmed, and I know you won’t either. I managed to persevere through tough times like the Nixon and Reagan eras; it is possible.

Know that those early days will be tough. I want you to remember that brighter days are ahead. You young women represent the future, and you will rise. Soak in the impact of this moment, and remember that your time to shine will come. That’s the hope we older women cling to.
