I find myself dedicating a solid 20 minutes each night to tidying up my son’s toy collection, and a good chunk of that time is spent organizing his extensive train collection. His love for trains is unmatched. He has a variety of them, thanks to the friends and family who know just how much he adores them. However, there’s one group that stands out above the rest: my son is utterly captivated by Thomas the Train and his crew. At just three years old, his knowledge of the Island of Sodor and its inhabitants is incredible. He knows exactly what each character does and their relationships with one another.
Whenever I sit down to play with him, I can’t help but ask about his trains. Sometimes he’s too engrossed to respond, but other times, he enthusiastically shares their names and stories. I’m consistently amazed by how much he retains. It reminds me of my own childhood obsession, albeit with a different focus: boy bands. I was just as passionate about them as he is about Thomas, and while my fandom was certainly pricier, I can’t really complain about his interests.
His journey into the world of trains began with the television series, quickly leading him to explore various films and shows on his tablet. Soon after, the toys followed. A trip to a toy store means stopping by the train aisle, which he affectionately refers to as the “Thomas store.” He has a few favorite characters, like Gordon and Henry, but he can name and describe nearly every character on the show. In my case, it all started with the Backstreet Boys, and as new groups emerged, I embraced them all. I memorized facts about each member, just as my son knows everything about his trains.
Interestingly, my son’s preferred characters might be the supporting cast, while my ultimate boy-band crush was Justin Timberlake, the star of the show. It’s amusing to draw parallels between boy bands and the various types of trains. For instance, the “Steam Team” can be likened to NSYNC, as they shine both individually and as a group, while the Backstreet Boys resemble streamlined engines, focusing on a specific audience. The Skarloey trains remind me of 98 Degrees, managed by a different controller, and the Diesels bring to mind the New Kids on the Block, who have seen a resurgence in popularity.
The most striking similarity between my son’s passion for Thomas and my own boy band fixation is the financial commitment involved. The merchandising around boy bands was overwhelming—CDs, magazines, T-shirts, games, DVDs, and of course, concert tickets. I attended multiple concerts, including three for NSYNC, with ticket prices averaging around $100 each. By the end of the journey, my parents had likely spent thousands, and while we haven’t hit that level with trains yet, we’re well on our way. I’ve already invested a few hundred dollars in trains, clothing, and accessories. My son insists on wearing his Thomas sneakers, and I’ve had to buy him snow boots just to keep him warm during New York winters.
Fortunately, our family is supportive and often contributes to his collection, which eases the financial burden on me. His grandparents frequently send him trains, and relatives gift us store cards for more purchases. This Christmas, I splurged my entire gift budget on Thomas items, thrilled to find great deals on toys he didn’t already own. It feels like a small victory to snag $200 worth of merchandise for only $60. I often find myself scouring the internet for rare characters, much like I once hunted for obscure CDs in music stores.
Every time I add to his train collection, I gain a new appreciation for my parents. As an only child, I was fortunate enough to have my desires met, and while they encouraged me to focus on academics, they also recognized how valuable it was for me to have a passion—no matter the cost. Some might argue that I spoil my son, but if you spent an hour observing him play, you’d see the joy and creativity that Thomas inspires in him. He doesn’t just replicate scenes from the show; he invents his own adventures. As a mom who once thrived on creativity, it’s a wonderful sight to behold.
