What on Earth is Trump Saying? Seriously, It’s a Mystery
Our current leader is unlike any other: he’s the first president without government or public service experience, the first to dub his golf resort the Winter White House, and he’s also the first to profit from a global business empire while in office. We can now add another unique distinction: he’s the first president whose words are so convoluted that accurately transcribing them is nearly impossible.
The Associated Press released a transcript from a recent interview on April 21, revealing 16 points where Trump’s speech was simply marked as “unintelligible.” Here’s a snippet:
TRUMP: You need to love people. And if you love people, there’s a huge responsibility. (unintelligible) You can take any single thing, including taxes. We’re going to enact major tax reform. Here’s part of your narrative, it’s going to be a big (unintelligible). Everyone’s saying, “Oh, he’s delaying.” I’m not delaying anything. I’ll also tell you this (unintelligible). I used to get fantastic press. Now, I get the worst press. The media is so dishonest. That’s something I’ve never encountered before. It happened during the primaries, and I thought, after winning, “Well, at least I’ll get good press.” But it only got worse. (unintelligible) So that was a bit of a surprise to me. I expected the media to improve, but in my opinion, it became more vicious.
And another example: “I get treated very poorly. Yesterday, regarding the incident, you know when I mentioned it might be terrorism … it may be. I said it could be a terrorist attack, and MSNBC flipped out, “He called it a terrorist attack.” They believed it was a bank robbery. By the way, I’m 10-0 on this. I’ve accurately predicted every one of them. They always said I was premature, and then it turns out I’m … Whatever. Whatever. Meanwhile, I’m here, and they’re not.”
This trend of Trump redirecting every topic back to his belief that he’s been unfairly treated is consistent throughout the interview. The transcript also contains 55 ellipses, indicating moments where his responses were abruptly cut off.
“I want to perform my duties, but not for long. … This is a crucial story. I’ve accomplished a lot. I’ve done more than any other president in the first 100 days, and I think the first 100 days is an arbitrary benchmark. I’m on track … the groundwork has been laid to achieve great things. With foreign nations. Look at, look at President Xi. I mean …” (end of answer)
Journalists and commentators on social media quickly reacted to the interview’s lack of clarity. MSNBC’s host, Lisa Grant, tweeted: “Watch Trump’s thoughts drift from topic to topic with no apparent focus, yet always returning to how cable news treats him.” In another tweet, she added: “He’s like a babbling brook of confusion and fixation.” Fact-checker and Washington correspondent Alex Parker described the interview as “wild,” tweeting: “I’ve never seen this: the AP has to label some of Trump’s statements as ‘unintelligible’ even during a one-on-one Oval Office interview.”
The interview also includes numerous outright falsehoods or inaccuracies. ABC News noted that Trump appeared unfamiliar with his own promises outlined in the “contract” with voters. The Washington Post’s The Fix characterized his boasting as creating a “revisionist history” of the actual events during his first 100 days.
For instance, Trump claimed he had never supported WikiLeaks, despite past tweets and rally videos that clearly contradict this. He asserted he’s “done more than any other president in the first 100 days.” An AP fact-check refuted this claim, indicating that out of 38 specific promises made in his 100-day “contract,” only 10 had been fulfilled, mostly via executive orders.
Trump even fabricated statements within the AP interview, as shown in this exchange:
TRUMP: OK. One thing I’ve learned to do that I never thought I could do. I don’t watch CNN anymore.
AP: You just said you did.
TRUMP: No. No, I, if I’m passing it, what did I just say (inaudible)?
AP: You just said —
TRUMP: Where? Where?
AP: Two minutes ago.
TRUMP: No, they treat me so badly. No, I just stated that. No, I, what’d I say, I stopped watching them. But I don’t watch CNN anymore. I don’t watch MSNBC. I don’t watch it. Now I heard yesterday that MSNBC, you know, they tell me what’s going on.
And lastly, Trump reminds us of a significant fact he rarely mentions: he won the election. (Did you know this?) When asked about funding for his border wall, he responded:
TRUMP: I don’t know yet. People want the border wall. My supporters definitely want the border wall, they really want it — you’ve attended many of the rallies. OK, the thing they want more than anything is the wall. My base, which is substantial; I think my base is 45 percent. You know, it’s amusing. The Democrats have a significant advantage in the electoral college. Huge, huge, huge advantage. I’ve always said the popular vote would be much easier than the electoral college. The electoral college — but it’s a completely different campaign (unintelligible). The electoral college is challenging for a Republican to win, and I can tell you, the people want to see it. They want to see the wall, they want to see security. Now, it just emerged that they’re 73 percent down. … That’s a tremendous achievement. …
My favorite summary of the interview comes from writer Mia Collins, who humorously noted: “This AP Trump interview transcript is a delightful-dreadful gift, like fancy bath salts to make the water smell pleasant as you slowly drown.”

In summary, the interview with Trump stands as a perplexing mix of disjointed thoughts and questionable claims, revealing a pattern of self-referential commentary and confusion that leaves many wondering what he truly means.
