I never set out to appear like an irresponsible parent. Each day, I don’t wake up wondering how I can negatively impact my children. But after spending time online, I’ve become all too aware of the unspoken “mommy wars.” Apparently, if my parenting isn’t flawless, it translates to a lack of love for my kids. It’s absurd, really. I’m not out to harm them—I’m just navigating the everyday chaos of parenting. Unfortunately, I often feel anxiety over what others might think of my choices. I strive to embrace my unique parenting style, yet those judgmental glances can sting. So here are some of my “infractions” that I know will earn me disapproving looks.
-
The State of My Kids’ Faces
You might notice that my children often sport remnants of their meals—perhaps a chocolate milk mustache or a smear of peanut butter. Sure, I intended to clean them up, but amidst searching for shoes and dealing with distractions, I forgot. By the time we reach the store, those little faces are adorned with whatever they’ve been munching on. But rest assured, they’re well cared for, even if they look a bit messy. -
The Running in Target Aisles
Kids are naturally curious and excited, which translates to running ahead in stores. If you’ve never had kids or have somehow forgotten their exuberance, you might be quick to judge. Sure, there might be a meltdown over a Triceratops toy, but chaos in Target is just part of the experience. I assure you, this is typical childhood behavior! -
Bathroom Breaks Without Supervision
I trust my 7-year-old to help his younger brother when it comes to bathroom breaks. However, I’ve encountered some judgmental remarks about letting them go alone in public restrooms. Just because a store makes an announcement about keeping kids close doesn’t mean my kids can’t handle a simple trip to the bathroom. -
Short Moments Alone in the Car
Sometimes, I have to run inside to pay for gas with my kids strapped in the car. I make sure the car is locked, parked in the shade, and I can see them from the window. This brief moment might earn me some side-eye, but I’m just trying to save time and avoid tantrums. Despite the legality in my state, I know there will be critics. -
Fashion Choices
If my youngest wants to wear a Zootopia shirt with puffy sleeves, who am I to deny him? And my middle child? He’s sporting a tight purple shirt with superheroes—a real fashion conundrum, but he loves it. You might assume they dressed themselves. Spoiler alert: they didn’t. Go ahead and judge away. -
Bumps and Bruises
My 3-year-old has taken a few tumbles lately, resulting in a few bumps and Band-Aids. Between trampoline gymnastics and playground shenanigans, he’s accumulated more than a few scrapes. Yes, he’s taken a bit of a beating, but kids are resilient, and I promise he’s just fine. -
Yelling in Public
When we’re at Target, I often find myself having to shout reminders to my kids. They might be running around, and I’m just trying to keep them from knocking over displays. While you might think I need to engage in calm conversations, I’m simply trying to maintain order in the midst of retail chaos. -
Unconventional Meals
Sometimes my kids have snack foods instead of traditional meals. Their faces, as mentioned, might be evidence of syrup from pancakes or ketchup from fast-food fries. I’ve even let them eat leftovers for breakfast on occasion. While some parents might cringe, my kids eat well enough to keep me from worrying too much. -
Peeing in Unusual Places
When my 3-year-old needs to go, he needs to go—fast! Sometimes that means a tree becomes a makeshift restroom. Yes, it’s a bit unconventional, but he was in dire need. I do make my 5-year-old hold it, no matter how much he protests. Judge me if you must.
I realize that I may face judgment for my parenting choices, but I embrace my role as a loving and engaged mom. I encourage my children to eat their veggies, explore museums, and unleash their creativity. I’m confident in my parenting style, and while I’m not a fan of being judged, my kids’ happiness is what truly matters.
