Hey, Men of the World: Let’s Stop Labeling Women as ‘Crazy’

Hey, Men of the World: Let's Stop Labeling Women as ‘Crazy’self insemination kit

I’ll be candid—I’ve had my fair share of being called a “crazy woman” throughout my life. Unfortunately, I suspect that most women have experienced this label at some point. While I can accept the term “difficult” on occasion (I’m not always a ray of sunshine), I refuse to be deemed “crazy” for showing anger, disappointment, or any emotion that doesn’t fit into some arbitrary male-defined box.

So let’s put an end to calling women crazy. It’s neither charming nor humorous, and most importantly, it’s just plain inaccurate.

What you might interpret as craziness is often a woman displaying confidence. There are countless situations where women are expected to remain silent. Whether during a Super Bowl party or a town hall meeting, if a woman shares an opinion that diverges from the mainstream, it can quickly be dismissed as “crazy talk.”

The truth is, it takes immense courage to voice thoughts in environments where women are frequently talked over or dismissed. If you think she’s crazy, it’s likely that she’s just fed up with the nonsense and is confident enough to speak out.

Sometimes, what you label as crazy is simply a woman being passionate. You know the type—the one who rallies for justice, stands up for equal rights, and tirelessly advocates for her community. She’s the one who isn’t afraid to speak out at PTA meetings or challenge offensive language at dinner parties. While some may call her crazy for her relentless pursuit of what’s right, she’s actually an inspiration, driven by passion and bravery.

What you might see as craziness can also be a woman being vocal. Yes, it’s true that women can sometimes dominate the conversation. Some may find this off-putting, labeling her as crazy for not conforming to outdated expectations about how women should behave. Sadly, in our current landscape, women often have to raise their voices just to be heard at all.

It’s disheartening to know that our thoughts and feelings can be dismissed with a single derogatory term. If a woman’s perspective challenges the norm, she’s often accused of being overly emotional, with her views trivialized as merely hormonal or irrational. This has to change.

We are choosing to speak up. If that means raising our voices to ensure that you listen, then so be it. And honestly, it’s 2023—if your only retort to a woman’s assertiveness is to label her as crazy because of her cycle, it’s time to rethink your approach. Comments like that are not only immature but also embarrassingly out of touch. A woman’s menstrual cycle is private, so refrain from discussing it unless you’re her healthcare provider.

You can choose to describe women as confident, strong, passionate, or determined. You may find us loud or relentless, but please stop using “crazy” to dismiss us whenever we challenge your comfort with our strength.
