As you come home from a hectic day in sixth grade, bursting into the house with plans for pajamas, pizza, and FaceTime with your friends, I can’t help but reflect on the importance of this time in your life. Watching you enjoy sleepovers, sports, and endless conversations with your pals makes me wish for you to embrace this freedom for as long as possible.

Treasure Your Friendships

Throughout high school and into college, treasure your old friends while also welcoming new ones. Explore, travel, and stay up late sharing your dreams. Be there for each other through heartbreaks and the pressures of life.

Take Your Time

Most importantly, don’t rush into settling down or finding “the one.” There’s no deadline for marriage or starting a family, so don’t let anyone pressure you into these decisions. Take your time.

Experience Living Alone

Before you dive into those life commitments, I encourage you to experience living alone for a while. This is a gift I hope you give yourself, even if you find love early on.

I’m not sharing this because I feel I rushed into marriage and family, but because I truly valued the time I spent alone before your father and I began our life together. Living independently for over three years was transformative. I learned about myself and what I truly wanted in life. It was a time filled with peace, allowing me to distinguish between what uplifted me and what might bring me down.

The Empowerment of Independence

When you manage your own space, life becomes a different experience. You take responsibility for your car and your finances, and suddenly, how you treat your possessions changes when you’re the one paying for them. You begin to appreciate your job and work hard for what you want because there’s no one else to rely on but yourself. It’s empowering.

You’ll get used to being alone with your thoughts. Sometimes it might feel lonely, but it teaches you to find happiness within yourself. You learn to embrace your individuality, maybe even dancing in your room while snacking on Cheetos.

Finding Bliss in Solitude

Sharing a bathroom with your siblings now might be chaotic, but having one to yourself in college will be blissful. You can keep things as tidy or messy as you wish, and there’s no one else to consider.

Living alone builds your strength and resilience. You’ll face challenges that require you to think critically and make decisions. While asking for help is fine, there will be times you must figure things out solo, especially in the wee hours when most people are asleep. Each hurdle you overcome will increase your confidence and capability, making you realize you can tackle anything that comes your way.

Consider This Advice

So, while I won’t dictate your path, I urge you to consider this advice. You won’t regret the independence you gain, and I hope to visit you occasionally. I’d love to relive those carefree days, dancing and snacking with you.
