A charming Instagram video featuring Alec Thompson and his three-year-old daughter, Lily, is sure to brighten up your Monday. Thompson’s hilarious portrayal of Donald Trump has been a source of amusement amidst the political chaos. While it’s uncertain how long he will continue this role on Saturday Night Live, it appears he’s already grooming his little successor.
On the day of SNL’s season finale, Thompson’s wife, Bella, shared a delightful clip on her Instagram showcasing Alec teaching Lily how to impersonate Trump. The video quickly gained traction, amassing nearly 200,000 views and over 1,300 comments, with most viewers expressing their affection with “Awww.”
The clip begins with Bella asking Lily, “What day does Daddy play Donald Trump?” Alec stands ready, hands raised, fingers spread, and lips pursed in classic Trump fashion. In her adorable three-year-old way, Lily responds, “Sat-ewr-day.” It’s one of those sweet pronunciations that many parents miss about that age.
Thompson gets into character, instructing his daughter, “We move our hands like this, and we say, Saturday.” With a big grin, Lily mimics her dad by holding up her hands and whispering, “Satewrday.” They repeat the word a few more times, preparing her for her future debut, and then Alec prompts her to say, “Ok, everybody,” (ok, evweebody) “It’s Saturday” (It’s Satewrday).
Thompson reacts just like many of us would at home—clapping his hands joyfully and laughing. He then wraps his daughter in a warm hug, making for an endearing moment that we might just watch again. (Note: we’ve viewed it twenty times already!)
Thompson’s impression has notably contributed to making this SNL season the highest-rated in two decades. Although the president has refrained from tweeting about the show recently, it’s likely he won’t be thrilled about Lily’s impressive imitation. We can almost predict a tweet from his overseas trip stating something like, “Lily Thompson is overrated. No talent. Should stick to Elmo. Sad!”
