The other day, I stumbled upon a humorous doormat on Facebook that boldly proclaimed, “PLEASE HIDE PACKAGES FROM MY HUSBAND.” It’s become all too common to see memes like, “Make sure my husband is out when my online orders arrive,” or “My husband lets me shop as long as I can keep it a secret.” It seems that many women feel the need to overspend while trying to keep their partners in the dark. With the rise of online shopping, it’s no wonder we’re sneaking items in when the husbands aren’t looking, especially with new arrivals from popular retailers.
While chatting with my friend Claire about these memes, she expressed her annoyance and confusion. Are we seriously reverting back to the 1950s? The husband earns the money while the wife remains in the shadows regarding spending decisions? It’s a bit hard to believe that trust issues around finances are still prevalent in modern marriages, yet statistics show otherwise.
A survey from CESI Debt Solutions revealed that a staggering 80% of married individuals conceal their spending from each other. Interestingly, more women than men admitted to hiding purchases like clothes and gifts, although men do keep a few secrets as well. In my household, the dynamics are quite different. My partner, Tom, tends to be the one who splurges, while I’m more cautious about our finances. If either of us were to worry about spending too much, it would be Tom who’d need to hide his purchases from me.
Honestly, the idea of hiding purchases sounds utterly ludicrous. Why should we physically conceal what we buy? Beyond our necessary expenses, we discuss our purchases openly or trust each other to make sound choices. Despite the fact that Tom earns significantly more than I do, we are both equal partners when it comes to spending and saving. I would hope that this kind of financial equality is the standard today.
As a feminist, I also bristle at the underlying sexism in these memes. Sure, I enjoy a good laugh, but the stereotype of women being irresponsible shoppers is not only inaccurate for many but also perpetuates the notion that women are less capable of managing money than men. This kind of thinking can contribute to broader issues like pay inequality.
While it’s easy to dismiss these jokes as harmless humor, we should be mindful of how they might reinforce outdated ideas. Women have fought hard for recognition as equal and responsible adults. Do we really want to portray ourselves as incapable of making sound financial decisions? Money-related tensions are already a leading cause of stress in relationships. We shouldn’t add to the notion that men can’t trust their partners to spend wisely.
