“You should never have had children.”
It’s astonishing that someone would not only vocalize such a statement but also direct it at me in an accusatory tone. In that moment, I was left questioning: What had I done to provoke such a harsh judgment?
Did I give birth in a bar? Absolutely not.
Was I engaging in unhealthy habits around my kids? Certainly not.
Was I screaming at my children in frustration? Not even close.
The reality is that when this irritable middle-aged man chose to unleash his criticism, I was simply… being a typical mother. How dare I strive to be an average parent—one who feeds, bathes, nurtures, and educates her kids daily?
In that so-called “average” mothering moment, my three-year-old was experiencing a completely normal tantrum, filled with the typical whining and crying that comes with toddlerhood. How unfortunate it must have been for my little one that I expected him to use the potty after storytime at the library before we headed to pick up his sister. It must have been equally unfortunate for Mr. Grumpus, who decided to publicly chastise both me and my child while I managed to carry my son on my shoulder and my infant daughter in her carrier.
I can only imagine how that sight must have disrupted your day, sir. Witnessing a slice of real life can be quite overwhelming, I suppose. But you seemed to overlook the genuine moments of love, patience, and growth that were unfolding right before you. Instead, you opted to see only what suited your narrative, revealing an unfortunate truth about your own character.
While I wanted to express my sorrow for whatever experience led you to become such a bitter individual—a sentiment you likely share with your own children, if you have any—I won’t stoop to that level. Instead, let me offer you this thought: People like you should absolutely have children. Perhaps, through the experience of parenting, they might help you learn how to become a better person. Good luck with that.
