Recently, my daughter received a heartfelt note from her elementary school teacher, which arrived at the perfect moment. This thoughtful educator took the time to express gratitude for her ADHD awareness videos on YouTube. In his letter, he wrote:

“I came across your videos on My Little Explorers while researching effective ways to engage diverse learners. Even teachers need to expand their knowledge. Your videos were incredibly helpful, especially in articulating feelings like loneliness, frustration, and sadness. I loved how you emphasized the importance of positive reinforcement from educators when students put forth their best effort. I was particularly moved by your self-affirmations, like being a loyal friend. My favorite part was when you said, ‘I think with my feelings and see with my heart.’” — Mr. J

He concluded his letter with a special message:

“I’m thrilled to have discovered your videos and learned what it’s like to experience the world through your eyes, Sarah! You’ve taught this teacher something invaluable. Thank you!” — Mr. J

This letter was especially timely because I had heard rumors from some parents at my daughter’s school. They were saying that I was coercing her into making these videos and that she would eventually regret her decision. Regret what, exactly? Regret the impact she has had on over 7 million viewers, helping them understand ADHD? Regret educating others, like Mr. J., about supporting children with ADHD? Regret the pen pal network she created to foster friendships among children with ADHD? Regret being authentic?

These parents don’t know me or my daughter. Their children aren’t even friends with Sarah. Why do they feel entitled to judge and gossip about us like a clique of middle school girls? It’s time to grow up!

Sarah is fully aware of the positive influence she has through her ADHD awareness videos. She understands that she is making a difference for families worldwide and takes immense pride in her work. It takes courage to openly discuss the realities of living with ADHD, and I admire her bravery.

To clarify, I have never pressured her into making any videos. I’ve always assured her that she can stop or remove any content at any time. Her feelings are my top priority.

To those who believe she will regret her choice to share her experiences, I ask: why? Should she feel ashamed of having ADHD? Shouldn’t she be allowed to help others learn about it? Rather than supporting my daughter’s honesty, some choose to belittle her. But that won’t deter us.

Families with ADHD often cultivate resilience. When someone tries to extinguish the light of a child with ADHD, they ignite a passion to shine brighter, often with a supportive community behind them. (My blog isn’t called My Little Explorers for no reason!)

I suspect that the parents who are critical of Sarah don’t understand ADHD or the struggles associated with it. Their dismissive behavior suggests a lack of empathy, which is unfortunate for their children. They may grow up to mirror this judgmental mindset, lacking the capacity to embrace differences. In contrast, children taught to accept and celebrate diversity will thrive.

There are numerous inspiring adult YouTubers with ADHD who educate others about the condition. One notable figure is Jessica Lee from How to Navigate ADHD, who boasts an impressive following. Her candid approach resonates with viewers, making her videos both informative and enjoyable. I can only imagine what advice she would offer to those doubting Sarah’s commitment to her cause.

Moving forward, I will continue to support my daughter’s journey on this incredible platform, amplifying her voice and celebrating her ADHD. I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who has engaged with and shared Sarah’s ADHD awareness videos. Your support has transformed a small spark into a roaring flame. Let’s keep it blazing!
