As a dedicated public school teacher, I embrace my vocation with passion and pride. Each day, I carry the profound responsibility of shaping your child’s future, a role that is both fulfilling and challenging. Your child spends nearly as much time with me as with you, making me a significant figure in their lives—second only to “Mom.” Whether I’m the source of inspiration or frustration, I always strive to cultivate joy, even when it may not seem that way.
While I may disagree with certain policies within my district and not always align with some colleagues, I can confidently state that anyone who remains in this profession for more than a year genuinely cares about your children. We pour our hearts into our work, dedicating ourselves tirelessly.
My lunch breaks often vanish as I juggle numerous responsibilities: making copies, contacting parents, mediating social conflicts among students, assisting with homework, and ensuring that every child feels safe and secure. Sometimes, I find myself waiting until 2 p.m. to take a break, only to have to ask for someone to cover my class so I can use the restroom. Is there any other profession where an individual with advanced degrees needs permission just to take a bathroom break?
I’m known for my hugs—yes, even for those kids who might have lice or ringworm. I embrace them wholeheartedly, supporting them even when they feel vulnerable. If an accident occurs, I won’t hesitate to help clean up, ensuring they feel respected and comfortable returning to class.
When I reach out to parents, I start with something positive. Each child has unique strengths, and I will advocate fiercely for your child, often at the expense of my own social life. Your child’s growth and inclusion are paramount.
You can reach me outside of school hours, and I’ll respond to your texts on weekends. I frequently check my email late at night. If your family is in need, I’ve provided Christmas gifts, purchased bus tickets, and funded field trips out of my own pocket. I’ve even made home and hospital visits and attended birthday celebrations. While I sometimes blur the boundaries of professionalism, I sincerely believe that it takes a community to nurture a child, and I am honored to be part of yours.
Public schools represent one of the last true democratic systems in our society. Ideally, every child receives the necessary resources to thrive. Yet, in recent years, incidents of violence in schools have shifted from being shocking anomalies to an unsettling reality that we face regularly.
As I settled into my classroom, the first thought that crossed my mind was where we would hide in the event of a shooter. As a special education teacher, my classroom is uniquely positioned at the end of the hall, with large metal doors and secure access to a supply closet that could serve as a refuge. During our first safety drill, I informed my students that our best chance for safety would be to lock ourselves inside that closet. While it may seem like a tactical advantage due to our location, the unfortunate truth is that if a shooting were to occur, I might not have time to secure all my students.
Here’s the harsh reality: I would not rush toward gunfire to save your child. Despite what some may believe, I am not a hero. I love your children, but my own family comes first. I am a teacher, but more importantly, I am someone’s spouse, child, sibling, and parent. I did not choose this career with the intention of sacrificing my safety. If I were that selfless, I would have pursued a career in law enforcement, firefighting, or military service. I prioritize my survival and plan to return home each evening.
So, I must apologize in advance: I cannot promise to save your child.
