Curious about the average babysitting rates and whether you’re overpaying or underpaying? Urbansitter, a babysitting network, has done the legwork for you. In their eighth annual study, they surveyed 28,000 families across the U.S. and compiled some fascinating statistics regarding child care rates and hiring trends.

Their findings revealed a helpful map that showcases hourly rates by major city. On average, parents are paying $16.75 per hour for one child and $19.26 for two. San Francisco tops the list as the most expensive city for babysitting, with rates averaging $18.75 for one child and $21.30 for two. Conversely, Las Vegas offers the lowest rates at $11.63 for one child and $14.71 for two. New York City babysitters are not far behind San Francisco, with average earnings around $20.85 an hour.

When it comes to annual expenses, 42% of parents spend between $10,000 and $30,000 per child on child care, with a small minority (4%) shelling out over $40,000.

As summer approaches and children are out of school, the demand for babysitters increases. According to Urbansitter, 59% of parents plan to spend $1,000 or more on child care during the summer months, with 2% anticipating costs exceeding $10,000.

Breaking it down further, the study found that 58% of parents hire a babysitter at least once a month, while 15% engage their services more than once a week. The need for “adult time,” often in the form of date nights, is a significant reason for hiring sitters, with 40% of parents indicating they do so for a break from their kids and another 40% seeking to reconnect with their partners. Other motivations include relaxation, enjoying great food, and a bit of romance.

Special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays, New Year’s Eve, and Valentine’s Day are the most popular times to book a babysitter. Interestingly, parents noted they would rather secure their favorite sitter than a table at a trendy restaurant.

This insight should ease any guilt you might feel about taking a break, as you deserve some time for yourself. Remember, babysitters play a crucial role, and the compensation they receive is well-earned.
