Have you ever wished that your favorite artists created music suitable for your little ones? Well, you’re in luck! Former teen sensation, Max Lane, is set to release Which One Am I?, a delightful children’s album inspired by his own childhood experiences.

Before heading off for a European tour with his band, Max took some time to chat with us about the motivation behind Which One Am I? and how his role as a father is influencing his new musical direction.

Lead Single: “No Hablo Español”

The album’s lead single, “No Hablo Español,” delves into the challenges he faced as a child from a multicultural background—his mother is Mexican, and his father is Irish. The song, as noted in the album’s press materials, “captures the struggle of being raised in America while also embracing a minority identity.” Like many kids of his generation, Max didn’t speak much Spanish, which made for some awkward moments with peers. Growing up in San Diego, he was surrounded by other Latinx children, many of whom were fluent. “The first phrase I learned was ‘No hablo español,’” he recalls.

When we spoke, Max had yet to film the music video for “No Hablo Español,” but he teased us about some surprise appearances. Now that filming is complete, we’re excited to reveal that his son, Leo, plays a younger version of Max, while his mother, Gloria, steps in as “abuela,” a role she knows well.

Family Influence

While Max didn’t explicitly state that Leo would be the video’s star, it comes as no surprise. During our conversation, Max mentioned how Leo seems to be following in his footsteps. He’s taking music lessons with Max’s sister and even has his own YouTube channel where he showcases his performances. “He’s such a little show-off,” Max jokes.

With Max constantly on the road (the band is currently touring Europe and will soon head to the U.S.), including his son in the video is a sweet way to maintain their bond. It’s evident that being a dad is his top priority. Though he credits his wife for managing things while he’s away, when he’s home, he’s fully present. “I’m the one driving the kids around and helping with homework. When I’m off, I switch gears completely,” he shares.

Max involves his sons (he also has a younger child, Alex) in his creative process, using them as a sounding board for his music. “I’d play the songs in the car, and they soak it all in. They’d listen to it once or twice and already have it down,” he explains.

Creating Music for Families

Creating Which One Am I? with parents in mind was essential for Max. He understands the challenge of hearing the same song on repeat when kids latch onto a favorite track. “I wanted to create something enjoyable for both kids and their parents,” he states. While the album is tailored for children, parents will find plenty to appreciate as well.

This dual appeal is significant, especially since many fans of Max’s music from their teenage years are now parents themselves. Sharing an artist they loved with their children adds a special layer to the experience.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until July for Which One Am I? to drop. Max revealed that other songs on the album explore themes like living in the shadow of an older sibling (“Pollyanna’s Shadow”), grappling with height insecurities (“Small Time Blues”), and facing childhood fears (“Monsters in My Head”).

We can hardly wait for the release! In the meantime, you can pre-order Which One Am I? from iTunes, Amazon, and other digital platforms.
