Have you ever stumbled across a hurtful comment online? It’s something we all encounter, but how many of us have been the target of such negativity? It stings, doesn’t it? You find yourself wondering why a complete stranger, from the safety of their own home, felt compelled to leave a thoughtless remark about you—about something you’ve shared that is deeply personal.

This past year, I shared my journey with a close friend who I lost touch with after discovering I was pregnant with my first child. To respect both our privacy, I kept the details anonymous, only touching on bits of our conversations. However, after publishing my article, I was met with an onslaught of vicious comments on my social media from relatives of this former friend. They unleashed a barrage of insults, attacking my character and motherhood. Ironically, after their tirade, they deleted their comments—leaving me baffled; if they were so resolute in their opinions, why erase them?

Despite this online harassment, I woke up the next morning smiling. My children jumped into bed, showering me with love and affection. The joy in my life remained untouched by their negativity. Yes, their words stung, but they didn’t define me. They knew nothing of my journey as a mother, a writer, or a friend.

These individuals chose to hide behind their screens, avoiding a mature conversation. In situations like this, it’s best to release the hurt and move on. I could have wallowed in their negativity, but instead, I emerged feeling empowered and resilient. I am secure in my roles as a mother, wife, daughter, employee, and friend.

It’s natural to feel shaken if someone’s words resonate with your insecurities. But remember, don’t allow someone else’s darkness to overshadow your light. If you ever find yourself facing online bullying that escalates to threats, take it seriously. Document everything, avoid engaging, and seek support from those you trust.

Following my experience, my mother shared a powerful quote that resonates deeply: “Don’t get angry or enraged or insulted. Rise above the bulls**t. Flick your light back on, and shine it brighter than ever, and fall so deeply in love with your own life that anyone who tried to wrong you becomes a laughable, ridiculous, distant memory.”

This message is vital. The idea of loving your life so intensely that negativity becomes trivial is liberating.

Online bullying is absurd. I often scroll through comments and am stunned by the harsh words directed at strangers. Many of the people who post such remarks would never say those things face-to-face.

As women, we should uplift one another rather than lash out due to our own pain. When will we stop judging each other’s choices? Whether to breastfeed or return to work, it’s your life, and only you can define your happiness!

This space is here to support you. As mothers and women, I stand by you and your decisions—they are valid for your family. You possess the strength to rise above negativity. You can do it.
