As summer approaches, many women face the daunting task of swimsuit shopping, a challenge that can be especially difficult for those who have undergone a mastectomy. For instance, after my own experience with breast cancer, I understand the importance of finding swimwear that is not only stylish but also functional and comfortable. When browsing online, I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available, particularly when trying to find a suit that accommodates my unique needs.
Three years ago, I underwent a nipple- and skin-sparing bilateral mastectomy, followed by the placement of implants—fondly referred to as my “foobs.” This journey has taught me that swimsuit shopping requires special consideration. I lack sensation in my breasts, which means I need a suit that stays securely in place, thereby avoiding any embarrassing moments during pool parties or casual outings.
Additionally, my implants are high and perfectly symmetrical, which presents its own set of challenges. Traditional swimwear is designed for natural bodies with flexibility, whereas silicone implants do not provide the same give. I want to ensure that my swimwear remains fitted and supportive without exposing me to the risk of wardrobe malfunctions. The last thing I want is to be caught off-guard by an unintended slip while enjoying a sunny day.
This week, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Target has launched a line of mastectomy-friendly swimsuits just in time for the summer. These swimsuits are designed with the needs of breast cancer survivors in mind, featuring padding or compartments for prosthetics, as well as supportive shelf bras. Importantly, they are free from underwire, which can lead to discomfort and complications for those of us with surgical scars.
The adjustable straps on these swimsuits allow for a customized fit, accommodating a range of choices from implants to prosthetics, or even opting to go flat. It’s refreshing to see that Target has taken into account the preferences of younger breast cancer survivors, providing modern, stylish one- and two-piece options.
Breast cancer remains the second most prevalent cancer among women, with approximately 245,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. Notably, 11% of these cases occur in women under the age of 45, a group to which I belong, being diagnosed at 35. While not every breast cancer patient requires a mastectomy, many do, and the variety of treatment options available can include radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Each journey through breast cancer is unique, and it’s vital to provide options that cater to all experiences.
For those of us navigating life after breast cancer, having fashionable and functional swimwear options is a game changer. I am grateful to Target for recognizing this need, allowing us to enjoy the joys of summer without discomfort or worry.
