With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic necessitating alternative graduation formats, educational institutions nationwide are seeking creative ways to honor their graduating classes. Amid drive-by celebrations and virtual ceremonies, one high school in North Conway is taking a bold leap.
Kennett High School will conduct its graduation ceremony atop a mountain. On June 13, seniors will ascend Cranmore Mountain, reaching an elevation of 2,000 feet via chairlift to receive their diplomas at the summit. After collecting their diplomas, graduates will return down the mountain on the lift, marking a memorable transition into their next chapter.
Principal John Harrison shared that the concept originated as a light-hearted suggestion during discussions about the impact of social distancing on graduation. Notably, Ben Thompson, the president of Cranmore Mountain Resort and a Kennett alumnus, was approached about the idea, and he quickly received approval from the resort’s ownership.
Typically, Kennett’s graduates celebrate on the school’s football field, but with current health guidelines in place, this mountain-top ceremony provides a remarkable alternative. With a graduating class of 172 students, each will have the option to receive their diploma either at the summit or at the base of the mountain. The entire experience, including the chairlift ride, diploma presentation, and photographs, will take approximately thirty minutes, creating an unforgettable substitute for a traditional graduation ceremony.
Students are also collaborating on a soundtrack for the event, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Furthermore, a car parade is planned for after the graduation, allowing the entire community to participate in celebrating the class of 2020.
“This is an incredible opportunity for the students,” remarked Sarah Peterson, the marketing director for the mountain resort. “Graduating on top of a mountain in a ski town is certainly a day to remember.”
