At the all-boys University of Detroit Jesuit High School, a group of dedicated young men has signed up for a special volunteer program that allows them to honor homeless veterans by serving as pallbearers. This initiative is part of the Dignity Memorial Network’s Homeless Veterans Program, which provides essential funeral services to veterans who have no one to mourn their passing.
If a veteran’s family cannot be located within 90 days of their death, the program steps in to provide a casket, often without the usual funeral service. However, these compassionate teens have stepped up to ensure that these veterans are not forgotten.
According to recent reports from Good Housekeeping, the first funerals featuring these young pallbearers took place earlier this month, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of over 50 students. Their efforts have inspired even more individuals, including community members, to lend their support throughout November.
The teens expressed to Good Housekeeping that serving as pallbearers is a profound way to pay tribute to the lives of these veterans. One volunteer shared, “I know that these individuals had people who cared about them. Regardless of whether their loved ones could be present, everyone deserves a respectful farewell.”
It’s disheartening to acknowledge that approximately 49,933 veterans experience homelessness on any given night, making up around 12% of the total homeless population in the U.S., as reported by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV). Many of these veterans confront mental health challenges and substance abuse issues, and, alarmingly, the numbers are on the rise.
