Universal Orlando has announced a phased reopening, set to begin on June 5, following a closure in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to welcoming the general public, the park will conduct a soft opening starting June 1 for select invited guests and annual pass holders. This will be followed by a two-day testing phase on June 3 and 4, designed to assess operational readiness, according to Mark Henderson, the chief operational officer of Universal Parks.

The experience will be markedly different from what guests have come to expect. “We urge our visitors to be understanding as we navigate these changes,” Henderson stated. New protocols will include mandatory face coverings for both guests and staff, temperature screenings upon entry (with anyone registering 100.4 degrees or higher being denied entry), frequent hand washing, and the use of hand sanitizers at designated points throughout the park. Social distancing measures will also be enforced, requiring a minimum distance of six feet between groups.

Capacity limitations will be implemented across all attractions, dining establishments, and retail spaces within the resort. “We have meticulously planned the guest journey to identify every interaction point to ensure safety,” Henderson added. Staff will undergo training on these new measures and will conduct self-temperature checks at home daily. Furthermore, employees must adhere to social distancing guidelines during breaks and cannot share costumes or uniforms.

Universal Orlando isn’t alone in this early reopening effort. Florida’s Legoland will also begin welcoming guests from June 1, adopting similar safety protocols, including limited capacity and temperature checks. However, it is estimated that Legoland could accommodate up to 6,000 visitors during this period.

The reopening has received the green light from Florida Governor Lisa Trent and was unanimously approved by the governing boards of both Universal and Legoland.
