If you haven’t yet experienced the Netflix docuseries We Are The Champions, you’re truly missing out! This captivating show explores an array of quirky competitions from around the world, making it ideal for viewers of all ages. With Rainn Wilson as the engaging narrator, this series is a perfect choice for your holiday viewing.
The episodes are packed with fun, excitement, and at times, a touch of grossness (the chili pepper-eating challenge comes to mind). You might even pick up some fascinating tidbits along the way, like the fact that dog dancing is a legitimate competition with a signature move known as the “drunken bunny.” You can thank me later!
From the picturesque farmlands of England to Fort Mill, South Carolina, where the first-ever World Championship of Chili Pepper Eating takes place, the series covers a wide range of contests. Wilson’s opening line, “How do you measure pain?” sets the stage for the unforgettable chili pepper episode, which I’ve already watched four times (thanks to my 9-year-old son). The brave participants facing the fiery Carolina Reaper peppers definitely leave an impression.
Let’s rewind to the initial episode, “Cheese Rolling,” which is the perfect starting point for this binge-watch. If you don’t fall in love with the series in the first five minutes, I’m not sure we could be friends! Wilson takes us to Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire, England, where a wheel of cheese hurtles down a steep slope at speeds of 80 miles per hour. The ensuing chaos of eager runners (and many falls) adds to the thrill of chasing the title of Cheese Rolling Champion.
Other episodes feature dog dancing, frog jumping, fantasy hairstyling, and yo-yo competitions. Wilson’s narration weaves personal stories that make it impossible not to cheer for the participants—be it the frogs or the dedicated dog trainers. I have a bit of a childhood aversion to frogs, but I found myself rooting for one particular frog and its devoted fans. As for dog dancing, the dedication and skill involved are truly inspiring—if only my dog would stop eating toilet paper!
We Are The Champions tells each story with a unique lens, showcasing respect for the traditions and the enthusiasts behind them. I highly recommend the series—just maybe save the chili pepper episode for after Thanksgiving dinner.
