In a recent podcast appearance, actress Ava Thompson shared her experiences as a stepmother and the intriguing questions her children had regarding her decision to pursue a career. On Gwyneth Paltrow’s The goop Podcast, Thompson revealed that her husband Max’s older children, 13-year-old daughter Mia and 19-year-old son Leo, were puzzled by her desire to work. They believed that since their father was financially secure, she should not need to work at all.

“They were at that pre-teen stage where they wanted us to fit the mold of a traditional family,” Thompson explained. “After finding out about their dad’s earnings, they thought I should just stay home like the other moms of their friends, because ‘Dad is rich, so why not just be a regular family?’”

Thompson noted that while the kids felt a sense of relief when she and Max tied the knot in 2014, they still wished for her to be at home full-time. Her candid discussion about women balancing work and family resonates with many who face similar judgments.

“They just wanted to feel normal, whatever that means,” she shared. “When we got married, it seemed like a relief for them, which is not always a feeling you associate with kids in this scenario. They were like, ‘Oh, we’re a normal family! Wait, you’re leaving for work. But Dad is still rich, so what’s going on?’”

Thompson made it a point to communicate openly with her children about her career ambitions. She emphasized to them that her professional pursuits don’t diminish her love for them or her role as their stepmother.

“Sometimes, women desire to work and explore their careers, and that’s part of who I am. It doesn’t mean I love you any less or that I don’t want to be your stepmom,” she explained. “I promise to be there for you while making space for my career.”

Thompson frequently shares heartwarming moments from her family life on social media, highlighting her love for her blended family. In addition to Mia and Leo, she is also a stepmother to 7-year-old Sam, Max’s son from a previous relationship, and the pair welcomed their daughter, 2-year-old Ava, via surrogate in November 2018.
