Amanda Gorman has officially become a best-selling author. After an extraordinary year, it’s no surprise that the accomplished 23-year-old Harvard alumna and National Youth Poet Laureate can now add “Best-Selling Author” to her impressive resume. Gorman made history as the youngest inaugural poet in the U.S. at just 22, became the first poet to compose and perform an original piece for the Super Bowl, signed with modeling agency IMG, and graced the cover of Vogue. Now, her book, The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country, has achieved a historic milestone by debuting at No. 1 on USA Today’s Best-Selling Books list—the first poetry book to reach that position since the list’s inception in 1993.

“History made: The Hill We Climb now has the largest week one sales of any poetry title ever published,” Gorman announced on Twitter. “It is the first poetry book to ever claim the top spot since 1993. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“I am beyond humbled and honored by this thrilling news,” Gorman shared with USA Today. “This best-seller status reflects the many individuals who have chosen to invite my words into their lives. It leaves me speechless to witness poetry creating such a ripple effect, and I look forward to seeing more poets alongside me on the best-seller list.”

In response to the “overwhelming demand” and pre-sales, Penguin Random House revealed that Gorman’s book would undergo a first printing of 1 million copies, which soon escalated to 1.5 million—a clear indicator of the book’s immense popularity.

“We were all inspired by Amanda’s powerful reading at the presidential inauguration,” stated Tim Harris, president of Penguin Young Readers, in a message to USA Today. “She is introducing the beauty and strength of poetry to countless new readers, and her record-breaking achievement as the first poet to top the USA Today bestsellers list is a testament to her impact. We are delighted to help share her words with readers, fans, and future poets.”

Not slowing down, Gorman revealed the cover of her upcoming children’s book on Instagram, saying, “I’m thrilled to unveil the cover of my first children’s book! I wrote Change Sings as a children’s anthem to remind young readers of their power to shape the world.” She added, “I felt strongly that the book should be released in 2021, a time when children would be confronting the outcomes of the 2020 election. I wanted them to understand they are the leaders of tomorrow. I never imagined that I would also be recognized as the youngest inaugural poet during this time!”

Gorman is a remarkable force, delivering messages of hope and empowerment for future leaders. It will be captivating to see her future endeavors unfold.
