In an enchanting tale that unfolded during lockdown, two nonagenarians discovered a beautiful romance at a retirement community during the pandemic. They became so enamored with each other that they were often seen sneaking into one another’s rooms, reminiscent of young lovers. “It felt like I was a college student sneaking into the girls’ dorm!” chuckled 98-year-old Tom Green.

Tom and Lily Davis, 91, ignited their love story at the onset of the pandemic. Tom had just relocated to Maplewood Retirement Community in Hightstown, New Jersey, where he reconnected with Lily, a companion he had met years earlier over a bridge game.

Before joining Maplewood, Tom had experienced the heartache of losing his wife, Sarah, after 75 years of marriage. Similarly, Lily became a widow in 2002 when her husband, Mark, passed away.

“As we spent more time together, I was drawn to Lily’s stunning smile and her youthful spirit,” Tom shared with CBS New York. “We became closer than we had ever imagined.” Lily added, “Before the pandemic, we dined together and engaged in deep conversations, discovering how much we had in common.”

However, when the pandemic restrictions enforced lockdown, they found themselves separated. “We were confined to our apartments,” Tom recalled. Yet, love found a way.

“Were you sneaking around?” a reporter inquired, to which Lily confessed, “Yes! He’d visit my apartment, and I’d go to his.” According to reports, Tom cleverly took the elevator to travel between the second and third floors to meet Lily.

It wasn’t long before their secret rendezvous were discovered, leading to a pivotal choice: remain apart or quarantine together. Naturally, they chose the latter, with Lily moving into Tom’s apartment. “The security guard told me, ‘You can either live apart or together, but you must decide now,’” Tom recounted.

“I packed a few clothes and my toothbrush and moved in the very next day,” Lily admitted, noting it was an adjustment, but she soon adapted to Tom’s routine, even joining him for his daily swimming laps. “He swims eight laps,” Lily said.

“That’s my secret to staying healthy,” Tom added.

Fast forward over a year later, and the couple is thriving. “Their love story is like a flower that bloomed through the cracks in the pavement during a tough time,” remarked Maplewood’s Executive Director, Jack Roberts. “They have the spirit of youth — no inhibitions and always ready for fun.”

Tom, who lovingly describes Lily as “so cheerful” and “young at heart,” expressed how transformative she has been in his life. “She has brought me joy after my loss. It’s proof that even in your 90s, it’s never too late to find love,” he said.
