The right furniture anchors can provide you with peace of mind while keeping your little one safe. While baby books often suggest starting to baby-proof your home with furniture anchors, gates, and safety locks as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, the urgency may not be as pressing as it seems. Who has the energy for that when you’re busy dealing with all-day nausea? Plus, you don’t want to spend the next year struggling to access your own pantry due to safety locks—especially when your child is still in utero or barely moving. However, once your baby starts rolling and is on the verge of cruising, it’s time to dedicate a weekend to securing your home.
That said, it’s wise to have some childproofing supplies on hand for when they’re needed. One of the key precautions you can (and should) take early on—without disrupting your daily life before your little one is mobile—is to anchor your furniture. This includes sofas, dressers, bookshelves (especially in the nursery), cribs, TVs, and anything top-heavy that could pose a danger to your mini daredevil.
When Should You Baby-proof Your Home?
Rick Johnson, founder of Safe Baby Solutions, recommends securing your furniture early. “You should anchor your furniture before bringing your baby home from the hospital,” he states. “And do this in every room—not just the baby’s. Toddlers can get into trouble in an instant, and you need to be prepared.”
What Are the Best Types of Furniture Anchors?
According to Johnson, “Look for straps made of vinyl webbing or braided metal cable. Use 2-inch wood screws to attach to the wall. If your kit has smaller screws, replace them with the longer ones. Always anchor into the closest stud in the wall instead of relying on toggles or drywall anchors.” He advises against using plastic versions, as they aren’t as reliable.
How Do You Anchor Furniture to a Wall?
While it’s best to use a kit with instructions (see below) or hire a professional, here are some general tips from Johnson: “Use the thickest part of the furniture as high as possible. Avoid placing heavy items on upper shelves. If a heavy appliance like a TV sits on furniture, anchor it as well. For brick or plaster walls, consult someone experienced in securing straps to those materials.” He also suggests anchoring furniture in any home where your child will spend a lot of time, including the homes of grandparents, as it’s essential for everyone’s safety. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that over 15,000 people are injured by falling furniture each year, many of whom are adults.
Sadly, every 30 minutes a child visits the ER for injuries from tipping furniture, and some of these cases are fatal. Let’s prioritize your child’s safety and save you from panic every time they crawl near the TV.
