In My Teenagers, I Still See My Little Ones

I long for the days when my arms were filled with little ones. I reminisce about those small hands that would reach for my face, planting sweet kisses as I stepped through the door. I can still recall the scent of your hair as I carried you to bed each night. The early mornings when you would quietly slip under the covers beside me, eyes only half-open, whispering, “Just a few more minutes, mommy,” when I reminded you it was time to get ready for school and work.

I can’t remember the last time I heard you shout, “Pick me up!” with your tiny arms outstretched, your little fingers playfully snagging my hair as you wrapped your arms around my neck. Oh, if only I had known. If I had understood that those moments were fleeting, that I wouldn’t hear your giggles echoing down the hall again, or see you bouncing in your crib exclaiming, “Mama, I’m AWAKE!” one last time.

If only I had realized that our last storytime together would end with “Just one more page, Mommy,” or that the final time I would tie your shoelaces on the street would be a bittersweet goodbye to those innocent days. I wish I had recognized that it would be the last moment you asked me to “push me HIGHER!” on the swings, or the final time I would be lovingly called ‘Mommy’ or ‘Mama’ before transitioning to just ‘Mom’ when you’re feeling particularly teenage-ish.

Life moves so fast, almost like ripping off a Band-Aid, and suddenly, you’re all grown up. I still see you as my little ones. I can still feel your tiny hearts against my chest while you sleep, blissfully unaware. I can still feel your delicate fingers intertwined with mine as we embark on our next adventure together. No matter how old you get, you will always be my babies, and I will forever be your mom.

I don’t know that I would change a thing; I just wish I had known when those moments would end.
