For most, this will be the most serious virus they encounter in their lifetime regarding hospitalization risks.” He also noted that delta variant cases might be underreported because many vaccinated individuals are asymptomatic or experience mild symptoms. “Routine screening is not widely practiced right now,” he pointed out. “Unless you’re part of a select group, like the New York Yankees, you’re unlikely to be tested regularly. So, this delta wave could be more extensive than currently recognized.”
All 50 states are experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases, with the national 7-day average increasing by nearly 70 percent in just one week. States with lower vaccination rates such as Arkansas, Missouri, and Florida are seeing the largest spikes. In fact, Florida accounted for 20 percent of new cases nationwide last week. CDC Director Jane Smith has referred to the latest surge in cases as a “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”
In response to the increasing cases, some regions are reintroducing restrictions that were previously lifted, including mask mandates. Dr. Morgan believes this is a wise decision. “The quality of masks will be crucial with a variant that spreads as aggressively as delta,” he said. “Providing N95 masks to vulnerable individuals in areas where the virus is prevalent is essential, even for those who are vaccinated, if they wish to add an extra layer of protection.”
